Blind axolotl shoving sand down his face hole- should I be worried? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:50 AM PDT My blind axolotl who also happens to maybe be a runt has been growing painfully slowly. He finally got over three and a half inches so I waited a little longer then put black sand in his tank. Well I've been watching him and he seems pretty happy, but I noticed he keeps gulping down sand. Like, lots of it. I've never seen a lotl eat THIS much sand. Should I remove the sand? Or will he be OK? I originally planned on just watching him to see if he can still find and eat his food on his own and keep pooping, but man, he is just shoveling it down. [link] [comments]

Proper water conditions for axolotl? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 07:37 AM PDT I have had an axolotl for a few days now and set up a new tank for him. I did my first water tests today after he has kind of adjusted to the tank, the levels that came out were PH 7.4-7.8 Ammonia 0-.25 ppm Nitrite 0 ppm Nitrate 5-10 ppm Do these levels look okay? Anything I should do with this? I got some SafeStart solution I was going to add but the levels seem to be pretty good on their own, is it worth messing with? [link] [comments]
Step By Step Cycling Advice Please Posted: 02 Aug 2019 07:16 PM PDT Hi, Okay so not to be obnoxious but I have autism and I find most guides to be a bit confusing to me. Can anyone give me an itemized list? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Aug 2019 09:30 PM PDT I'm not sure if anyone other than u/Rokuta has been following the inline updates at the semi-NSFW https://www.reddit.com/r/axolotls/comments/ciqt3t/help_distressed_axolotl_warning_graphic/ (disease progression photo warning), but my fiance's axolotl Sonnet contracted a mouth infection after eating feeder fish. Another axolotl, Soliloquy, contracted the same infection a couple days prior, but did not respond well to a couple days of five-minute salt baths. In both axolotls, the fungus appeared on their faces, around the mouth. It initially appeared about 2-4 days after the first minnow got nom'ed. For Sonnet, the fungus manifested 'suddenly', a large growth across the mouth that was not there 36 hours prior, along with mild facial bleeding. It seemed rather malignant prior to applying Erythromycin. We suspect that ambient air temperature played a strong role ~ the weather has been 95/70F for most of the last week, and the AC doesn't push things much below 74F midday. The fungus attacked the facial skin, gills, and eyes ~ fairly localized externally. It primarily grew laterally, but would occasionally 'bloom' 3-8mm further down the axolotl. One attached to a gill tip at T+48h, and consumed the gill until Erythromycin was applied. There was evidence of hemorrhagic septicemia (internal infection) based on hind limb and tail injuries without external fungal sites, around T+72h. Treatments and results:
We are currently monitoring the recovery and last phases of the fungal infection. I will post additional recovery reports every 12h in a comment thread. Current status as of 8pm MDT, August 2, 2019, at https://imgur.com/a/oJE2EK2 ... We are not biologists, do not have a microscope, and did not study samples of material in the tubs. We did not monitor tub water pH, chemical properties, or other qualities, beyond simply monitoring temperature starting T+72h. There is an after-market weather station in the apartment, but not in the same room as the tanks or the tubs, so ambient temperature was not recorded. I may read "Illustrated Guide To Home Forensic Science Experiments", acquired in a Humble Book Bundle, the next time something looks amiss with this guy. I may be renaming Sonnet to "Johnny Five". Axolotl hasn't eaten in over a month Posted: 02 Aug 2019 05:39 PM PDT My axolotl has been ignoring all food (pellets, shrimp, night crawlers, bloodworms, etc.) for over a month, but is not overly thin. I am starting to get worried, she is in a 20 gallon tank with a sponge filter and tidal 110, the water temp is a bit high, I try to lower it as much as I can but it is still in the low 70s. Nitrates around 10 ppm, nitrite and ammonia are 0. What should I do? Should I just let her be or should I force feed her [link] [comments]

Interesting study of most common Axolotl illnesses and the months of occurrence Posted: 02 Aug 2019 12:53 PM PDT Was casually doing Axolotl research, ya'know the usual, and I stumbled upon this interesting chart with rough data on the frequency of various Axolotl illnesses brought to a Veterinarian. While i'm sure many fungal infections are cared for at home it's still a good resource for owners, at least to know the general frequency of each type of illness. The season when most occurrences fell was summer, between the months of June-August so Please remember how important keeping these guys cool is when it comes to overall health! " The sample comprised 97 pet A. mexicanum individuals brought to the authors' hospital during the 82-month period, i.e., from January 2008 to October 2014. In total, 116 diseases were identified. The most common disease was hydrocoelom (32 cases; 27.5% of all cases). " (hydrocoelom = edema or fluid retention) [link] [comments]
Shrimp in axolotl tanks? (Also suggestions for a newbie) Posted: 02 Aug 2019 02:09 PM PDT First post here and curious- I've read up a bit and watched too many videos, and have seen some people mention having (I think) ghost shrimp in the tanks with them to help keep the tank clean? I'm beginning the set up process for a tank for one so by the time I get it, it'll be cycled and all that and was wondering if keeping shrimp with axolotls really is a thing or not. Wouldn't they end up eating them? (And would eating a shrimp be bad for them?) Thanks in advanced! I figured it wasn't exactly the best idea to keep any tank mates with them unless it was other adults when they're big enough but...? Also any general tips and tricks on helping keep the tank clean and the levels for everything where they should be would be awesome as I'm always open to suggestions and help! I'm hoping to eventually in a year or so do a large live plant tank and genuinely know very very little about live plant stuff so plant suggestions and such would also be appreciated 😅 Thanks for the help y'all! Excited to eventually post photos of my own and be more than just a lurker here!! [link] [comments]
