For those who were interested in our eggs are getting along, we just found an early developer! If you zoom in you can see his tiny little gills. Help us give him a name!

More egg spam (sorry) but just an update on our twins who seem to be developing just fine. Most of our eggs are at this stage but this morning we have spotted even more early bloomers like the little guy on the previous post! As you can tell, I’m very excited now lol.

Your experiences with soft water

Posted: 28 Jul 2019 08:00 AM PDT

Soon I'm moving abroad to Sweden where tap water is very soft (20-24 mg Ca/l or 2.7-3.3 ° dH) compared to the water I'm currently using (no exact numbers but hard water is quite a problem in my country actually and there is always limescale in my tank). I'm worried that it may affect my axolotls.

After a bit of research I found some mixed opinions - some people say that they keep their lotls in soft water without any problems and supplementing water is risky and other talk about anemia caused by not hard enough water.

Does anyone have any experiences with switching to softer water or keeping axolotls in soft-water area in general? Do you supplement the water? If so, what exactly do you add to increase the hardness?

Help, distressed axolotl (warning, graphic)

Posted: 27 Jul 2019 08:05 PM PDT

So my fiance has an axolotl, previous two, and they both had 'this stuff on their face'. The first one, she treated it for fungus with a salt bath, and the axolotl lost gill mass and did not recover.

Now there's this one. We aren't finding much information that looks specific to what's going on. Does anyone recognize what's going on here?? Rather than jumping to conclusions, we're reaching out for remedies for this second axolotl.

Marked NSFW because this is not a pretty sight.

Fiance said the water is great. Axies were last fed PetSmart feeder fish. I do not recall the axolotl being in this bad of a shape a day or two ago, but they were hiding 'in the back of the tank', rather than towards the front where the people walk. There are two snails in the tank, and they've been in and out of their shell ("acting funny", she says). The plastic box this axolotl is photographed in previously did NOT have those red splotches in it.

"Churro" my copper baby

Posted: 27 Jul 2019 06:50 PM PDT

Is it normal for my axolotl’s top left gill to be bent like this? He isn’t acting stressed at all and is eating properly.

Posted: 27 Jul 2019 05:53 PM PDT

How normal are “umbrella” gills?

Posted: 27 Jul 2019 07:41 PM PDT

I've heard they signal stress but mine has had them since I got him 2 weeks ago. I have another one who's perfectly fine but this one hasn't had normal gills yet. I haven't noticed anything else wrong. He's eating, he's active, the tank is clean. Is this just a normal axolotl quirk or do I need to change something?

Newbie Help algae bloom & ammonia spike

Posted: 27 Jul 2019 06:47 PM PDT

I am asking for help from the Axolotl community. Please I am at a total loss on what to do. I am a newbie to having a Axolotl. I did cycle (it took over a month for the nitrogen parameters to be correct) the aquarium prior to receiving Ubbe 2 months ago. He is a 5 inch lucy. Unfortunately I made a huge error. I have a algae bloom in full force. Last weekend during my normal wc I thought if I scrubbed the entire tank and changed the purgen filter I could solve the algae bloom. I know I was totally wrong. I ended up killing the nitrogen cycle. Of course my tank went cloudy again on Tuesday. I have been doing 30% wc daily since then. As of Thursday I now have a ammonia spike on top of the algae bloom. Another issue is that as of Thursday this week my city tap water now has a ammonia level of 2.0ppm. I am researching installing a water filtration system. I have scoured the internet for solutions, but have not found a definitive answer. He eats 2 red wigglers nightly. I keep all of his waste cleaned out. By spot cleaning with a turkey baster, as well as siphoning all waste out during weekly wc. Please what should my next steps be to control the algae bloom and ammonia spike? I truly appreciate any advice to help Ubbe be healthy and thrive.

Here is a list of all of my aquarium information.

Fluval flex 15 gallon Evaporation cooling method Bare bottom tank 3 hides Anubis plant Suction cupped hammock Marimo moss ball 2 fake aquarium plants Small feeding bowl

Filter: Multi-directional dual out-put water flow 132 US Gal/h Foam filter block Seachem purgen Fluval biomax media

Products I use are: Seachem prime Fluval biological enhancer

API freshwater master test kit results: pH-7.2 Ammonia-0.50 ppm Nitrite-0 Nitrate-0 Temperature 66.6

Quick question. Is a sand bottom tank dangerous for a 3-4 month old axolotl

Axolotl’s slime coat peeling??

Posted: 27 Jul 2019 03:06 PM PDT

I just put my axie back in his tank after letting him get used to the water and his slime coat is suddenly peeling off a little on the side of his body. What can I do to fix this? This just started so I'm hoping I can do something about it before it gets much worse. He won't die from this will he?? EDIT: it's apparently gone away. So hopefully there's no problems now?

Cycling tank

Posted: 27 Jul 2019 11:02 AM PDT

Hey guys, I am currently cycling a tank and running into some issues. I finally got my ammonia and nitrites down to 0, but now my nitrates are off the chart reading at over 160. (Don't worry my Axolotl is not in this water). I just don't know what I should do. I've read plants help but I'm not sure they will help at this high of a level. Should I use R/O water? What about spring water? Does this come with nitrates already in it as my tap water seems to be doing? Any advice helps!
