(EXTREMELY URGENT) Axolotl Swimming Frantically After a Water Change

Posted: 30 Jul 2019 10:54 PM PDT

I have had a 4 month old Axolotl in a temporary tank for the past couple of weeks while my tank was being cycled. He has been fine, but today I noticed the gills on the left side of his head were really short. I was worried so I did a water change just as I have been the past couple of weeks, and after he went in he keeps swimming around frantically. How could there be something wrong with the water if I just changed it? Is there something wrong with him? Please help

Got her some pvc pipe to hide in today but she still decides to sit in random places like this. No barking yet but more movement then usual so she's definitely getting used to her new home.

all three if my axolotls have fungus. Chansey(my leucuistic) has alittle more than the others, and I'm not sure what to do. my dad won't help, and my mom can't help after today because she's starting chemo. do i need to separate them all? and are there any tips anyone can give me?

Tank won’t start cycling

Posted: 30 Jul 2019 02:33 PM PDT

I'm very stressed. I move in 3 weeks and planned to have my axolotl's new tank cycled and ready for him as soon as we arrive at the new place. Thought it would be the least stress for him to go from the car into his new tank instead of into his old tank then more or less as soon as he settled move him again into another one.

However, it's now been 3 weeks since I put ammonia into my dechlorinated tap water in his new tank. There are two filters running, and yet... nothing has happened. I'm following this guide: https://modestfish.com/how-to-cycle-your-aquarium/ and it says that you know it has only just begun to cycle when nitrites start showing up. My API test kit has been reading ammonia 4ppm 0 nitrite 0 nitrate still. It's been 3 weeks already and now I only have 3 weeks left and it apparently hasn't even started!

I'm really panicking as mushu gets bigger everyday and in his tiny tank I have to do near constant water changes to keep him safe. After the aquarium sub recommended seachem stability I ordered some and it's only been 2 days but still no difference and I've read so many bad reviews of it!

I really need this cycled as quickly as possible and would love help. Also if it doesn't cycle fully, I'm moving with an empty tank and just wet filter media. Will the cycle continue from where it was or need to start all over again when I refill the tank? I know when it's cycled you can move it this way but what if it's mid-cycle?

Shall I just drain it and start again? I know pets corner near me sell tetra safe start - is that any better?

Also worth noting when I first put ammonia in my test kit hadn't arrived so could have dosed too much. Have done a lil water change since then though. I'm so stressed about this! Thanks for your help

Vacation and Heat

Posted: 30 Jul 2019 08:21 PM PDT

I've done a bit of online reading about this, but I'm looking for some insight from other caretakers here, and hoping to get some opinions on my situation.

I have to travel abroad for a wedding in September, and I'll be gone for about two weeks.

However, last summer we had a long heatwave of 41 to 45 degrees. Everyday I made sure to do some water changes (with cooler water) and feed them some frozen bloodworms, and add some ice rocks to the tank every day (little dice shaped rocks that you can freeze for whiskey on the rocks and such). They've never had any issues with the heat because I'm there to cool them down.
Every summer we have an average of 37 to 42 degrees for heat. Insulation here isn't very good either, so the house gets HOT while I'm out.

Unfortunately we don't have the budget to run the air conditioner for 2 solid weeks, nor does it have a timer or setting that allows it to automatically run.

I have someone who will be coming by the house to feed them and do water changes and such, but he won't be able to come every day. When he is there, he'll be able to get them some frozen snacks and run the air conditioner a bit and cool down the water, but it might be every 2 or 3 days. Which means they might be sitting in pretty warm water for 2 or 3 days.

I've seen differing opinions that Axolotls can bear with the heat for short bursts (though I don't know if that's for 2 days or up to a week). I've also seen people mention that they fridge their axolotls during heatwaves. (Again, we're talking 2 weeks and someone who can open the fridge for air only every 2 or 3 days.)
I've also seen fan/insulation covers to help cool the tank.
I'm tempted to tub them and bring them to that person's house instead, (about 45 minutes away) but it means they'll be in a tub-sized space for 2 weeks, and not sure if the move will stress them too much.

What's your experience with heatwaves or extended periods away from home?

Taking my lil lotl into an exotic vet on Thursday because I think he might have a parasite. Can anyone give me tips? What should I take, what should I expect, what should I ask, etc.
