Suitable plants to provide plenty of grazing spots for my shrimp?

Posted: 12 Jun 2019 06:15 PM PDT

Just looking for some suggestions for low tech/low requirement plants that will provide the surface area for bio film to grow. I currently have Eco-complete substrate, a piece and spider wood, a rock pile that can function as attachment locations. I have 2 Dwarf Sag, 1 hornwort, and 4 spots of java moss on my spider wood. The only inhabitants are 2? (probably a lot more) bladder snails that came in on the plants. I will be getting a few Ghost shrimp this coming Monday and will eventually be welcoming a group or Red Cherry Shrimp to the 10 gallon. Looking for other plant suggestions, thanks.

Replacing PH-buffering substrate - Tank redesign: Tray, separation, or external box?

Posted: 12 Jun 2019 09:09 PM PDT

I am going to have to replace my substrate in my CRS tank soon and I want to make a new design for easier changing in the future. My current setup has ALL PH-buffering substrate covering the whole bottom of the tank; this setup is BAD for changing the substrate as I basically have to tear down the tank to put all new PH-buffering substrate in. I would like to keep some inert substrate in the tank in future changes for the beneficial bacteria consistency, keeping some beneficial snails in the tank, and the fact that I won't have to tear up plants every year or so. The way I look at it, I have 3 or so options. (I am not using the under-gravels for my primary filter, I have a HOB and a bubble filer)

  1. Create a tray out of acrylic or glass that will house a small under-gravel filter so I can simply lift this out, change the substrate in it, and throw it back in the tank. Downsides to this method is the other substrate will have to be moved from under the tray to have it sit even and on the floor when I put the tray back. I can keep my current (10 gallon) tank with this method
  2. Simply silicone dividers on the floor of the tank to keep the substrates divided as much as possible, with an under gravel filter in the divided section. I will have to get a new tank to set this up in, but I won't have to disturb the inert soil at all when removing and replenishing the depleted buffering soil. (this is what I'm leaning towards) Somewhat like this http://www.shrimpspot.com/topic/1044-half-bare-bottom-tank-setup/
  3. I put new PH buffering soil in a large HOB or breeder box and have the water circulate through there. The downside here is less capacity and therefore less stability as the soil will likely have to be changed more often.

I am leaning towards option 2 as it seems the most simple to me. Just suction the old PH-buffering substrate out and put the new substrate in every 6 months or so. I plan to build my own simple undergravel filter that will suit my dimensions for this project.

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Ellobiopsidae

I'm looking for others' experiences, in general, and specifically re: treatments. I found one, just one, young shrimp yesterday with the start of it and immediately quarantined. Am feeding with this medicated food. I spent hours looking at the other shrimp and cannot find a single one who looks compromised. What are the chances that I caught it at the beginning?

The infected shrimp is new, from about two or three weeks ago. I should have quarantined — didn't occur to me until I was releasing the new guys and kicked myself for fucking up. Still, I think there's a good chance the food will work for the one sick dude because the infection appears very light.

E: the photo is not of my shrimp; to see the green stuff on mine she's gotta be right against the glass with her pleopods facing you

I want to transform my 3.7g tank into a shrimp tank

Posted: 12 Jun 2019 11:40 AM PDT

Hello everyone! First time posting here but I've been lurking and gushing over everyone's tank. I have a 3.7 g imagitarium tank that I want to transform into a shrimp tank but I have no idea where to start. After I move my current fish to a bigger tank I want to take virtually everything out of the tank for a cleaning and cycle it again with already established filter media. Any advise is welcome!
