Build a shrimp trap, they said. You’ll catch all your shrimp, they said.

Remineralized RODI with high ph

Posted: 08 Jun 2019 05:54 PM PDT

My ro filter is producing water straight out the filter with a kh and gh of 0 with a tds of 0ppm. The ph however is at about 8.2 to 8.4 even after aerated with an airstone for days. I remineralized the water on two separate times. Once with salty shrimp sulawesi 7.5 and once with salty shrimp kh/gh+ according to the directions. My tds matches the suggested for each but with both products my pH increases or remains the same. I know kH will drive pH up but aren't both they both supposed to be at a ratio that would drive the pH into the 7 range?

I tested the kh and gh after adding the sulawesi remineralized and the kH was 3 but a gH of 9. Doesnt even match the ratio in which it's supposed to be. Yet when I use sl aqua blue Wizard on the same RO I get a pH in the high 6 range to low 7. Granted all sl aqua does is add gH not kH

I find it hard to believe that I got two bad batches of two different mix salty shrimp products. What am I missing here? Why is my RO pH so high immediately after coming out and days after while being aerated? Why is adding salty shrimp at the instructed amount not yielding the proper kH/gH ratio or pH?

Breeding shrimp in a 5 gallon?

Posted: 08 Jun 2019 04:58 PM PDT

I've been keeping up with a 5 gallon and a 10 gallon tank in my apartment for some time now, and I wanna use the 5 gallon to start breeding (not using the 10 gallon cause it has 9 guppies in it). From the research I've done, using the 5 gallon for breeding should be okay but I can't find really solid information on that. I wanna start with 10 green babaulti and 10 cherry and breed both of them in the same tank as they can live in very similar water and don't interbreed from what I understand. Are there any glaring problems I'm skipping over? I'd hate to spend like $150 on high quality shrimp and then either produce no offspring or worse kill the original shrimp. I have established tanks and my plan for breeding was to buy more moss for hiding places and then getting cholla wood or almond leaves or something along those lines to help with optimal environment conditions.

A few recent deaths. What should I check?

Posted: 08 Jun 2019 04:09 PM PDT

I've had RCS in my tank for several months now. Over the last week or two, I've had 3 deaths. Parameters are still ok at 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite, 10ppm nitrate. pH 7.5

What else should I check and consider? Thanks!

Is my Tank Ready?

Is my Tank Ready?

First I would like to let you know, that I am new to shrimp keeping. This will be my first tank, and I have done quite some research. I'm sure I will continue to learn/improve, but I think my tank is quite ready for some new inhabitants.

My PH is about 7.2-7.4, Ammonia is non existent, Nitrite's are non existent. Nitrates are at about 10-15. My apartment stays a comfy 76 degree's all day, however I will be getting a tiny heater for the tank and possibly set to 74.

I live in a much nicer area and checked with the city on my water, TDS is about 150-160.

All 4 plants came from BucePlant, (I don't think the christmas moss is gonna make it), dwarf baby tears and dwarf hair grass are both rooting nicely, and the Marimo ball no longer floats! The substrate is a shrimp soil from Buceplant as well, and i have the all in one ferts from them.

I complete a 1 gallon water change every 4-5 days, and I set the water out 1 day before with Seachem -Prime in it. The pump in the rear is very weak, however i'll have the bubbler hooked up to the filter in the corner you see. I plan on getting a small shrimp hide as well to go near the front. I've ordered some Bactor AE for food, as well as a water drip kit to drip change water once they are in.

It only took about two weeks of cycling to get most the levels right, however I waited another month just to be sure and let some more bacteria build up, so it's been cycling about a month and half now?

I've got 10 dream blue velvet shrimp, and 3 zebra Nerite snails on the way. The snails will arrive a week sooner to hopefully clear out some of this brown algae.

I think that's about anything I can say about this small tank. Hopefully it does well. If you have any suggestions to make my shrimp comfier I'd appreciate it!

A bit more algae than i prefer. : ( Someone needs to eat it.
