Let's go around again! YEE-HAW!

What color shrimp is this? I found it in my cull tank. It came from a cherry red.

A pair of cherries sharing a meal.

There are three baby shrimps by the tip of the rock if you can spot them!

Holy cow, amanos are tough little buggers!!!!

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 03:20 PM PDT

Around 52 hours ago I brought home some amanos from Petco. I put them in bags to get acclimated to their separate tanks. One decided he preferred freedom and I didn't notice he was missing.

I just found him in the sink strainer and sadly picked him up to dispose of him when he moved to the other side of the paper towel and gave me the bird.

WTH?!

So he's now in his intended tank. I put him in and he darted away, apparently as healthy as ever. I didn't bother to acclimate him figuring that if he survived being in the sink for two days with hot water, dish soap and some potato bits there was nothing in that tank big and bad enough to take him out (only guppies so no worries there.)

I always thought of them as being fragile. Apparently some of them are made of much sterner stuff. LOL

Found the source of my tanks die-off, now what? Black spot disease

Posted: 15 Jun 2019 01:31 AM PDT

Been having heavy losses (1-4 shrimp per day) the last week, and my colony has shrunk by around 60%.

Did a lot of research today and I believe my shrimp have black spot disease. I can't buy the antibiotics recommended online here in my country though, so are there any other solutions? I've placed a fresh almond leaf in the tank as I've heard it has antibacterial properties.

Tank has 5-6 CRS and 10-12 blue dreams left.

Question

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 10:16 PM PDT

I had a small colony of bloody Mary shrimp in my community tank until I added a few glass catfish to the mix and while they were still stressed out from the move they wiped them all out but one super thicc, high grade mama that was berried at the time of shrimpocalypse. Now her offspring have all hatched and are starting to get brave and venture out of their surprisingly efficient hiding spots & I'm really excited to finally have the population rebounding. How scared should I be of all of the shrimp being inbred from 1 mother? What would be worse for the genetics- brothers & sisters mating or one of the offspring mating with the mother? 😂 I could add a few random cherry shrimp from Kijiji into the mix to dilute the gene pool, but the shrimp I have are all incredibly vibrant and some with red legs which are traits I'd hate to lose. Any other creature I would definitely dilute the gene pool, but I have read in a few places that shrimp are simple enough creatures that it doesn't really matter to a point. Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation?

Some of my shrimp, the cherries specifically, have these white dots all over. Anyone know what it is and if it’s harmful, how can I get rid of it?

Just saw my first shrimplets ! Can't wait to see them grow into beautiful orange shrimps.

2 Weeks have elapsed since setting up the tank and parameters have become acceptable for some inhabitants. I added 3 Ghost shrimp yesterday and will be adding 5 more come Monday. Its great to finally have some activity in the tank!

How often do you rinse your filter media?

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 12:32 PM PDT

Hi! I have a Fluval Spec V. I am using the filter materials it came with (minus the carbon). I know the beneficial bacteria tend to live mostly in the filter media.

But how often do you/would you rinse this filter sponge? I have read the recommendation to rinse it in removed tank water during a water change. But I confess, I don't know when or how often to do that.

Thank you, all, experienced shrimpers!

Is it normal for for Cholla wood to shed like this? It's making a horrible mess. No shrimp till next week. Should I leave the debris for them or remove it?

Telltale signs of happy or UNhappy shrimp?

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 12:20 PM PDT

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to the shrimp scene, so I'm still somewhat stumbling around trying to do things right. My tank is a 20 gallon tall, heavily planted, CO2 and heated, cycled in for 6 weeks. I've got a bunch of 20 blue dream neocaridina davidi who got to take the first dip (by slowdripping them in).

They seem to be quite interested in the leftover diatom algae since I can see them scrubbing around the tank and picking it off, but im a little concerned still. Mainly because 20 went in a week ago, and I can only see about 6 of em droning about right now. I did see a white shell float by, which I PRESUME was just some guy molting back there. I caught one doing the "C-shape", that's apparently what they do to molt? Should I be seeing more of them out in the open, though? They wont eat the pellet I dropped in, so that makes me worry more. Are they getting their grub on from my natural resources, or are they so unhappy they wont eat?

So long story short, what are tell tale signs of a happy or an unhappy shrimp?
