What’s going on here? My parameters are all pretty good and all my other shrimp are totally healthy

I just got my KH/GH test kit and my 28 gal planted aquarium tested really high. Can I use RO water for a partial water change to lower it?

Posted: 11 Jun 2019 10:20 PM PDT

So my test kit was 16 drops for the KH and 20 drops for the GH which is like reallyyyyy hard. I think it translates to like 290-350 ppm hardness. Not too surprised because the water in my area is really hard and I use conditioned tap for all my water changes.

My tank is a 28 gallon bowfront fully planted, cycled, the whole bit and it's stocked with pumpkin shrimp. Levels for ammonia and nitrates are always 0ppm (plants do wonders with the nitrates). pH is 8.2.

My question is, would it be harmful to do 3 or 4 five gallon partial changes over the course of a week or so? I'm going home this weekend and my parents have a crazy expensive reverse osmosis system (I personally like hose water myself 😂) so I was gonna bring my buckets and such and stock up.

Any advice is welcomed and greatly appreciated. I'm still reading and trying to cramp all this GH, KH stuff in my head.

Random Shrimp Deaths - Advice Appreciated

Posted: 11 Jun 2019 03:58 PM PDT

Hi all! I'm in need of a bit of advice. For the past couple months, my red cherry shrimps have been dying. Always one at a time, both adult and juvenile (~3cm) shrimps. Some of them have that line between the head and body, which makes me believe it's a molting issue, however, I see successful molts in the tank all the time. Today, I found 1 dead shrimp and 3 successful molts. I have been getting babies have having them grow up, however I do see dead babies from time to time as well.

Tank parameters are as follows: 10g tank set up 4 months ago, tropica soil and seiryu stone; temp around 22-24 C (gets a bit warmer now with the weather) Ammonia/nitrite/nitrate all 0 pH roughly 7.4-7.6 KH 3 GH 7 Calcium at 80 ppm TDS at 180ppm I change about 20% of the water, using tap water and adding minerals to match existing GH and KH

I put some egg shells in the tank to increase calcium. I've tried weekly water changes, I've tried holding off on water changes. I feed maybe once a week, either BacterAE or snowflake food or Hikari shrimp cuisine. The shrimps don't go crazy for food so I haven't been feeding much.

Am I missing something or am I just doomed to have Random Shrimp Deaths

After some initial difficulty with vorticella, my surviving 3 raised 8 healthy rcs babies. The yellow spots are eggs developing, correct?
