1st time Aquarist starting a reef tank

Posted: 10 Jun 2019 12:12 AM PDT

Hello, I'm new here so sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

So I recently got an aquarium tank for the 1st time and I've decided I want to build a coral reef tank. Maybe not the best choice for a beginner but I enjoy the challenge and reef tanks are just so cool! To put things in perspective though, less than 2 weeks ago I didn't even know the difference between freshwater and saltwater so I feel like I've learned a lot in a pretty short amount of time.

So my tank is 75g, long rectangle tank 4ft. for substrate I'm planning to do 5inches of sand, 3 inches of ultra fine sand on the bottom and 2 inches on top of more beach like sand. my hope is that this will give me some denitrification.

Idk if I should start out with live rock or dry rock to avoid potential pests piggy backing into my tank.

I still don't know much about corals.

for livestock I want to have 2-3 green chromis, 1-2 blue reef chromis, 1-2 orange clownfish, 0-1 black clownfish, 1-2 erectus seahorses, a green mandarin dragonet, 2-3 red ruby dragonets, 2-3 purple queen anthias, a starfish, a maxima clam, 2-3 blue leg hermit crabs, 2-3 red leg hermit crabs, 2-3 cleaner shrimp, snails maybe? and a black cucumber.

All these are reef and coral safe and non aggressive from what I've read?

I've read that the crabs, snails, starfish, cucumber and dragonets will all help keep the tank clean, and the clam will filter the water as it "breathes".

I know the seahorses need things to grab onto with their tails so soft corals are important.

That's about as far as I've gotten so far.

I just wanted to ask if any of you experienced reefers know some good online resources that can help or have any pro tips?

Any easy ways of mounting AI primes on rails?

I noticed the other line of lights by AI have rail systems, but AI seems stuck with the two back-of-tank mounts and the hanging rig.

Starting a new reef tank maybe? Thoughts?

Posted: 09 Jun 2019 07:16 PM PDT

My main concern is that I may or may not be moving about 3.5 hours away from my current home to Charlotte, NC, in about 3 years. I know having a reef tank is a long term commitment as I already have a freshwater tank setup. I love everything about the hobby and I want to have a reef tank. Is 3 years long enough to be able to truly enjoy a reef tank? Will I be able to move my setup with me in 3 years when the time comes easily-ish?

Does anyone have any suggestions on certain easy corals? I will have a pair of clown fish and I'd love to have a bubble tip anemone. I found someone with a pre drilled 40 gallon breeder, stand, skimmer, sump, and return pumps for $150. I already have a 300 watt reef light. I'll more than likely be buying this week.

Salifert testkits color charts hard to read

Posted: 09 Jun 2019 06:23 PM PDT

Hello everybody!

Just started with my first reeftank and tested the water with the Salifert testkits. I am not sure if I did it right because it's so hard to tell the difference in color of the testtube and colorcharts. I don't think I am colorblind, but is it normal that the colors are hard to see? I've tested almonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, alcalinity, magnesium and calcium. Do I have to test everything while cycling the tank? My LFS says I have to test everything and turn everything on. That means the skimmer, heater, powerhead, light and even adding adictive for the corals, which I don't have yet. Is this necessary?

Best Place to Order Anemones?

Posted: 09 Jun 2019 06:11 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I'm looking for a reputable but affordable place to get some (2-3) BTAs (I don't have too much of a preference of Greens or Roses). I see liveaquaria has a decent selection of them for $70 and under, so I'm looking around that price. If it makes a difference I'm located in Michigan.

Carpet surfer :( PLEASE HELP

Posted: 09 Jun 2019 02:59 PM PDT

Hello,

Just added my first pair of clowns 2 weeks ago. Everything was going great! Water levels are good, they seemed happy and healthy. Long story short, one of the 2 ended up on the floor.

I don't want this to be a constant concern and for peace of mind, want to get a lid. I have all hang on equipment (filter, heater, protein Skimmer, 2 powerheads). Wanting to know what solutions have been used in the past to prevent jumpers with hang on equipment.

Please advise. Thanks!!!
