Peacock Mantis Shrimp Questions

Posted: 08 Jun 2019 11:12 PM PDT

Thinking about setting my 55G tank up as a mantis only tank.

I have a 3 inch sand bed, and was thinking about adding in some live rock chips, or another kind of substrate to help him dig his burrows, how much would be a good amount, and which would be better?

Would pvc be nessecary to help him molt or would plenty of live rock be enough, and how much live rock would be enough?

Any other tips for equipment/random things you wish you would have know would be appreciated!

Ordering fish online. Need help

Posted: 08 Jun 2019 03:00 PM PDT

Longtime discus owner, so I'm familiar with ordering fish online. This will be the first time ordering marine fish online. Having ordered fish online before, I know some places are better than others.

So who do you use and why? Any places to avoid?

Thanks in advance.

[Help] My hammer coral isn't doing so hot. Any advice?

Posted: 08 Jun 2019 06:24 PM PDT

So I checked my hammer coral today and noticed that a hermit crab had started to pick at it. I pulled the crab off and now it's starting to spew stringy gunk into the water (picture links below). If I blow it off with a pipette it looks like more of it comes out of the skeleton. Is there any hope? Or is it done for?

New tank, first tests, need some guidance.

Hello all!

7 days ago I decided to start a saltwater tank. With not much knowledge and know how I went to my local saltwater aquatics store. I chatted with the owners of the store and got a lot of advice and I went home with some information and I did as much googling and you tubing over the next two days. I went back and purchased a 5 a gallon EVO tank, man made rock and some dry sand, and fresh sea water. I was recommended to use Dr. Tim's aquatics bacteria and Ammonia to help with the cycling. The tank has been cycling for 5 days now and I went ahead and tested the water for PH, Ammonia, NO2 and NO3. Water Temp was 76 degrees F, Amonia was off the scale, over 8.0ppm, NO2 is .25ppm and NO3 is 20ppm. I'm very new and I do not know how to understand these results. I'm aware this tank is no where near ready to add fish. Do I just still continue to let the tank cycle and check again in a few days? Or am I needing to do more at this point. Thank you for your guy's time and have a great day!
