First time Axolotl dad

Posted: 16 Jun 2019 07:19 AM PDT

Want to make sure I'm doing my best to take care of my lil guy (it's name is Drogon, unless it's a girl in which case... it might stay Drogon, honestly).

So I have a few questions... He's been in his tank for two days (today is day 3). My wife surprised me with him, because I've wanted an Axolotl for a really long time. Unfortunately, though, she knew nothing about cycling tanks. So Drogon went into an uncycled tank and I've been trying to in cycle the tank. I've got the API master test kit, so I'm keeping a really close (neurotically close) eye on Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate levels, so I'm not terribly concerned about Drogon...

But I do have some questions... Yesterday the readings were Ammonia 0.50, Nitrite 0.00, Nitrate 0.00 - I didn't do a partial water change, because I wanted to have some awareness of how the tank would fluctuate day-to-day so I'd know how neurotically I'd need to be checking things, and I want to be mindful of the biological filter that is developing. I also put a new, healthy, Anubias Nana plant in there with him yesterday. Today my readings are Ammonia 0.25, Nitrite 0.00, Nitrate 0.00.

I guess I'm confused about how the ammonia level could drop without there being much of a biological filter established (in my mind, evidenced by the lack of Nitrites and Nitrates?) Am I thinking about something wrong here?

Should I be performing daily partial water changes even though levels seem to be fine? Part of the reason I am hesitant to do PWC's is because the natural pH of the tap water where I live is pretty high (8.4-8.6) and I don't have a method of dropping it (aside from the tank naturally stabilizing itself), and from what I understand ammonia becomes more lethal in higher pH.

Any and all help/advice would be appreciated! Thanks y'all!

Transferring Tanks

Posted: 16 Jun 2019 04:46 AM PDT

Hi wonderful redditors,

My girlfriend and I bought an axolotl a week ago but we felt the tank was too small for her so we went and bought a bigger one yesterday. We're planning on transferring her once the new tank is ready but we bought a plant at the same time as the axolotl that isn't doing too well.

We realise it's because it is not getting enough light but we don't want to put the light on if the axolotl doesn't have anywhere to hide. The only problem with moving the plant to the other tank now is that our axolotl will not have anything else in the tank for a few days.

So my question is do we move the plant now to the new tank so it can live with some light or will the axolotl not cope in a completely empty tank for a few days?

A white spot

Posted: 15 Jun 2019 08:27 PM PDT

(disclamer: my english suck and I don't know all the terme use when I talk about axolotl, so I'm sorry if any of this is not clear.)

Hi everyone, I don't own any axolotl myself but one of my acquaintace does and she is a bit stress for her axolotl. She said that it got a white spot near its mouth and she don't know if it's normal, neither do I. I asked her for the parameter of the water, and she gave me this:

water at 18 degree

nitrite ans ammoniac at 0

She don't know the nitrate but she told me that she always put something in the water to prevent it

If it help, her axolotl have 11 month and it is probably a female.

need a bit of help with a stressed axolotl

Posted: 15 Jun 2019 07:09 PM PDT

i've recently returned (as in today) from a week vacation and i think my axolotl (archie, who is a year and two months old) might be stressed due to ammonia levels. its been a little under 2 weeks since my last water change (i did one the week before i left (50% water change)) and i come back to a little grey spot on her face and her gills are slightly curved backwards. i was worried something like this would happen and i'm not sure if it was related to ammonia or not. but as soon as i got home i did a full cleaning of her tank.. took out plants, cleaned the tile and her hiding spots, and rinsed down the tank. this is the first time i've had to deal with something like this before and i'm not sure what to do. i don't have any ammonia testing strips since i clean the water pretty regularly.. i've looked up online for ways to help a stressed axolotl but nothing has given me a concrete answer (some people say using a bubbler helps but she absolutely hates it because of the noise.) if anyone has any recommendations, it would be greatly appreciated!

Aquarium planning

Posted: 15 Jun 2019 12:15 PM PDT

Hi y'all!

I've had my axie for little over a half year now, and I've been wanting to upgrade his aquarium for a while. He's currently in a 15-16gal I believe (I'm used to liters), and I'm planning to get a 52-53gal sometime this month. He's currently on extremely fine JBL sand, but I want to try something else that is tidier, safer, and ... in my opinion, more aesthetically pleasing. I'm human, can't help it.

I have found that there are a good number of axie owners who use slate tiles for the bottom of the cage. I want to try this as well, though I wanted to gather some feedback first. I'm planning to cover the bottom with the tiles and I'd prefer to not glue them down. Does anybody here have any experience with tiles, and would it be better to glue them down? Any other suggestions, perhaps? Love to hear it :)
