Here is the place to post questions about pest ID, coral/fish ID, your cycle, or any other questions that generally wouldn't start up a conversation. If you have an interesting or unique question please create a new thread so everyone can discuss it in length!

These are some great resources for ID's of pests/algae.

Thinking about shutting down tank, Advice?

Posted: 11 May 2019 12:04 AM PDT

I have a 4 year old tank and its been slightly neglected. A lot of dirty algae and zoa's are dying. Fish are doing good but besides that, its pretty sad to look at.

I am currently in college, going into junior year as a Comp Sci Major and I don't know if I will have the time or financial capabilities to keep up with the maintenance cost since I will be quitting my job to fully focus on school.

Probably after I graduate, I would like to come back into the hobby so should I sell my equipment and everything now and rebuy it later because I would like to go bigger than 20 gallons or sell my livestock and storage the equipment since it can be useful later?

Tank Equipment:

IM Nuvo 20

Neptune Apex

Tunze 3155 ATO

Eshopps mini skimmer

Kessil a160we light

With test kits, salt, a lot of maintenance equipment.

I would like some advice because I don't know what I should do and where to start if I were to start selling my equipment. Thanks!

TIL that pee will set off your water sensors

Posted: 10 May 2019 09:25 PM PDT

In my fish room I have a water filter on the wall next to a toilet. I have one of my Neptune apex water sensors on the floor to make sure I detect any water leaks before it gets bad. I was at the grocery store when my phone blows up with alarms. I call my daughter to go down there to make sure we didn't have a serious leak (preparing myself to walk her through shutting off the water). She said she doesn't see any water so I finished my shopping and came home. When I got home, I checked the sensor and noticed a sprinkling of water (well, what I thought was water) on and around the sensor. After cleaning it up with a little toilet paper, I noticed it seemed just a little bit off color. I assumed the tile was just dirty. I later that evening I discovered that my 11 yo son missed the toilet when using the restroom. Ugh; now I have to disinfect everything...

ATO reservoir costs

Posted: 10 May 2019 10:49 AM PDT

I've recently added a sump to my system and thought I'd be fine staying on top of evaporation refill, but I've decided I should play it safe and get an ATO system. I looked on BRS and it looks like the prices for a 5-10gallon are between $100-$200. The brands are Innovative Marine and Trigger Systems.

From my sump research I know trigger is a good brand (don't know much about Innovative) but aren't ATO réservoirs just built to hold water? Wouldn't a $10 petco dollar-per-gallon tank do the same job? Am I missing something that a "real" ATO system offers that a tank wouldn't?

Edit: Thanks all for the replies! Looks like the consensus is "nothing special, just holds water". Crazy that they successfully charge $100+ dollars. I'll likely go with a 10g tank or a 5 g bucket.

Found these tenticals with white heads on them popping out from under my zoanthids right after my lights came on. They soon retreated after the tank became brighter. Does anyone have any idea what it might be?
