Is it bad to keep goldfish alone

Ive never kept a fish before but I'm planning to get a fancy goldfish and keep it in a 29 gallon tank. I've heard that it's a bad idea to keep them alone since they apparently get lonely but I don't have space for a bigger size tank and don't want to risk hurting the fish. Is it that bad to keep a goldfish alone?
