Do crayfish need to be able to reach the surface?

I've taken in a rescue crayfish on short notice from a neighbor of my aunt's (I'm the person people call when they want to find a home for the weirder critters). They've been keeping it in... well not awful but not so great conditions so I'm hurrying to put together something better for it.

One thing I'm not completely sure about is, is it important for the crayfish to be able to exit the water for oxygen? Or is a sponge filter enough to oxygenate the water for it?

warning deceased yabby. My yabby I have had 5 days unfortunately has passed away. I got all my waters tested, everything came back good. Before I purchased him, he was with yabbies twice his size hence why he lost his claws. He moulted only 2 days ago. Look like white tail disease?
