UPDATE: The Betta my coworker put in my mid-cycle tank is alive and well.

Posted: 18 May 2019 06:39 AM PDT

Last month I posted this angry rant about my coworkers dropping a Betta into my mid cycle tank. When I originally posted, I still didn't know who had placed him in the tank and I was livid. I found out later that day that it in fact wasn't actually my coworkers who did it, but rather my companies state director. My coworkers actually tried to stop her and cited to her all the stuff I had shared with them about the nitrogen cycle. She told them I had them "brainwashed" and added the fish anyway. She was unapologetic and insisted I didn't know what I was talking about regarding when a tank is safe for fish. This is my Bosses Boss so I couldn't exactly tell her to fuck off like many of you suggested (though I wanted to). She insisted that Bettas don't need a fancy tank like mine and that they can live happily in a little bowl if needed, blah blah blah. All the typical stuff you hear from people who don't know a thing about Bettas. She was also pretty casual about how if the fish died, it was no big deal.

A lot of you said I should take the little guy back to the store and honestly, that was my plan until she started talking about how it wasn't a big deal if I was right and he died. This royally pissed me off and made me dead set on keeping the little dude alive.

I did a huge water change to drop the ammonia levels to tolerable numbers and changed the water pretty much daily (anytime the ammonia spiked). I also bought some plants for the tank to help get things rolling. Our office intern was a huge help as well. She has 2 Bettas at home living in 20 gallon planted tanks, and donated several more plants and a VERY used, bacteria packed sponge filter to the cause.

After about 2 weeks the tank was fully cycled and the levels were perfect across the board (and still are).

I let the office vote on naming him and I am proud to introduce you all to Jeffery.

Thanks to this amazing community for helping me out and allowing me to vent to you all.
