Welcome to r/bettafish!

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

Quick synopsis of caresheet:

  • Minimum tank size is 5 gallons (about 20 liters) for a regular sized betta, and 10 gallons (about 40 liters) for a king/giant betta

  • Bettas need an adjustable heater and a thermometer to ensure water temperature stays between 78-82°F or about 26-28°C

  • Bettas need a cycled tank- this requires a filter

  • Bettas need silk or live plants and hidey holes with no sharp edges.

  • Bettas have a special organ, the labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe air. They require constant access to air at the top of the tank.

  • Bettas will jump- it is best to have a tank with a lid

Quick synopsis of the wiki:

  • Contains info on basic betta care, diseases, potential tank mates, tail types/coloring, differences between males/females, ordering bettas, moving with bettas, setting up sororities and MORE!

  • This most likely has the answers to your questions. Feel free to ask questions if you are confused or aren't sure about something.

WEEKLY HELP POST

This is the place to ask anything and everything about bettas. Be sure to include your water parameters(ammonia/nitrite/nitrate,) tank size, how long the specific issue has been occurring, and some pictures if there is something which requires a diagnosis (e.g. fin rot/melt, velvet, dropsy.)

How do I upload pictures?

Go to imgur.com and select "New Post". Add all the clear pictures you have so we can better determine what is going on with your fish. It is recommended you set the album to private if you don't want weird comments. Click upload. From there, click the share button- if you are on mobile, hit "copy to clipboard" and paste the link into your comment on here. If on desktop, copy the link and paste it here.

For those new to technology- ctrl + c is copy, ctrl + v is paste.

To have your link like this, put these [ ] brackets around the text you want to show, with no space before the first word or after the last word, and without adding a space after the second bracket, use parentheses ( ) for the link, with no spaces between the parentheses or the link itself.

Be sure to read our rules before posting or commenting.

If your question was not answered yesterday, please feel free to post again!

Ask away!

Why do people have betta sororities? (Serious question)

Posted: 06 May 2019 10:10 AM PDT

I'm genuinely asking because they don't make any sense to me. Like 95% of the sororities i've seen, the poor girls are bloated and shredded and covered in stress stripes, even if the tank is 'correct' (large, heavily planted tank) Do people really want to have multiple bettas in one tank so badly that they'd risk the health and safety of their fish? And i always hear so many horror stories about how everything in their tank was 'perfect' for a year and then suddenly, all the girls started murdering one another and then they died a painful, completely avoidable death.

I just really can't wrap my head around it. I have 3 female bettas (in separate tanks) and i would never, ever put them in a situation where one of them could get hurt by another betta. I don't understand the appeal at all and i'd love to hear from the other side.

My babies are just over a month old now! Huge variation in growth rates (should’ve changed water more often and started more microworm cultures earlier)

Is my Betta fish just lazy, or is there something wrong?

Posted: 06 May 2019 08:04 AM PDT

My Betta fish currently lives in a 10 Gal tank with a filter and a heater. He has 2 large caves to hide in and a large silk plant. He also has 1 smaller live plant and 2 moss balls. His water parameters are fine ( I use the liquid testing kit) and he eats normally. The only unusual behavior I've begun to notice from him is his lack of desire to roam the tank. He started out in a 5 gal. and was pretty active...

He used to constantly make nest and would love to swim around and hide in his cave. Now that he's in the 10 gallon, he just sits near the top of the tank in his hammock and doesn't do much. He won't event set foot in his caves anymore...

Does this sound like something may be wrong with him, or did my once active fish just decide to become lazy as he aged? I got him over Christmas but I have no idea how old he is. Any advice would help!! Thank you!

Edit: I'd also like to add I've considered he may be bored. He sits on my kitchen counter because we haven't found the perfect spot for his tank yet, so he doesn't see much stimulus from us throughout the day. I do try to get him riled up using a mirror at least once a day....Which he does flare at it! If anyone wants to see my tank set up, let me know.

New Betta issues.....just shy?

Posted: 06 May 2019 12:54 PM PDT

Hey /r/bettafish, I'm hoping you can help me out. My daughter finally got her new Betta the other day, but there have been some concerning behavior.

First some important info. The tank was fishless cycled for 2 months. It's a 5 gallon tank. My parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 5 ppm nitrates. Temp is 78 degrees.

When at the shop, the fish was lively and alert.....though was in a small bowl under bright light with no hiding spots. Once we got home, he almost instantly went inside a driftwood log we have in the tank and has basically been there since. It's almost been 48 hours. He comes out very rarely, and I just happened to catch him this time and got him to eat a few pellets. The other times we've seen him out, he is near the bottom of the tank and huddled against the log, or cramming himself between two moss balls.

Do you think he's just getting acclimated? Does he look ok (though maybe a bit stressed) in the video below? I'm going to be planting two more java ferns in the tank for additional hiding spots in the event he's just a little skittish.

Thanks!

Finrot and tear?

Posted: 06 May 2019 12:53 PM PDT

I noticed a couple days ago my boy had some red tips at the end. He's been a little lazier than normal so I've been worried.

I've been doing almost weekly water changes and testing every time and it seemed to be normal unless my ammonia is just enough to give him some fin rot?

I've included a couple of pictures and my parameters for reference. I don't know what I'm doing wrong! He had a few (struggling) plants in there, brown algae and debris. I'm about to buy a different siphon because it gets water out more than the actual debris.

Can anyone help me figure out if this is mild fin rot and what I should do?

From the time I got my Betta in September 2018 to now he's gone from being 80% white and blue to 80% black and blue- Do bettas normally darken with age? He's a very active and happy fish, I can't imagine it'd be something wrong

How does finrot progress?

Posted: 06 May 2019 10:36 AM PDT

Hey. I bought a betta fish yesterday and he has finrot. Like the end of his tail is a bitt black. Today I saw that it has gotten a bit worse, like 1-2mm more black on the end of his tail, I did put one teaspoon on aquarium salt when I did the water change.

My question is how does the finrot progress? Is it turning black then fall off then it will get white until the tail is healed?
