Posted: 01 May 2019 02:29 AM PDT I was wondering what substrate is recommended for planted tanks for axolotls. I've read many suggest flora base by Red Sea but I can't seem to find it in the US?? Is there a substitute or does anyone know of any sites that sell it (without the price ridiculously hiked up?) if not I know bare bottom with potted plants are an option but I would prefer to be able to use substrate. But if it's not safe for my future axolotl then obviously I'd go the bare route. Thanks! [link] [comments]
When you live with people with no knowledge of axie care... Posted: 30 Apr 2019 07:45 PM PDT So, my fiancé dug up a bunch of worms from the garden today and washed them off and asked me if I wanted them for my juvenile axie. I said sure, but that I only give her one at a time and I cut them up for her. He disappears for awhile, comes back upstairs and says "man that thing can eat!" I asked him how many he gave her, and he said "oh, I just dumped the whole thing in there." I thought he was kidding but just to be on the safe side I go check on her. Her stomach is twice the normal size and she looks like she's choking on a whole worm, and there are dying worms all over the tank! At this point in time I am supposed to be leaving for my ballet class, but instead I start cleaning out the worms which he thinks is pointless because "she'll just eat them later." Yes, a 5-inch axolotl will eat 15 worms, each longer than her body, later. I reminded him about ammonia spikes to which he replied "they're not going to make the ammonia go up, there's no way they can do that" (which was his answer when he asked me why I had to cycle the tank, he doesn't believe that their waste produces ammonia or that ammonia is lethal to aquatic animals...) and he's pissing me off because he doesn't see why I'm upset. He never listens to me when I talk about how to care for her and he thinks he knows more about axolotl care than I do even though he's never had one and isn't the one constantly doing research. Also, it's not his pet. I asked him to stay away from her from now on. She definitely ate at least 3, and I checked her levels tonight and they're ok...ammonia is at 0.25. I cleaned what I could and did a 25% water change. She hasn't pooped yet and is acting really tired. She's super bloated too. She can't fit in her hide and seems stressed. I'm worried, and pissed off. [link] [comments]

Cycling/Filtering/Overall Keep Posted: 01 May 2019 01:07 AM PDT Hey guys, my boyfriend and I are setting up a tank for an axolotl we are getting quite soon. I got a second hand tank (eco style 61) and have mixed feelings about the filter. We are going to be making our own filter media instead of the cartridges that come with it. I also have a few questions: 1) if anyone has this tank for their axolotl, what are the opinions on the output flow? 2) what are the best plants to put in with an axolotl? 3) is sand a good middle ground substrate between gravel and bare bottom? 4) if anyone has any tips/ opinions on how to make their own filter media bags/sachets/cartridges it would be appreciated. Any over all tips in keeping an axolotl would be great actually. Thanks for the read and sorry it's all boring stuff but I just want some advice before we get our axolotl. [link] [comments]
Transporting Axolotl, how long can they remain in bag? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 10:37 PM PDT Hello, so with my school year wrapping up soon I've been considering how to transport my axolotl home with me. He's fairly large nowadays (Nearly a year old, around 7-8 inches long) and I've been worried about how he'll deal with the 11+ hour car ride back home. I'm mainly worried about if the fish bag I'm transporting him in will provide enough oxygen/stay clean long enough for the trip's duration. The bags I have are the largest available ones from petsmart (can't find the exact volume listing anywhere). [link] [comments]
Kansas City area Axolotl in need of a new home Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:42 PM PDT Hi guys! I have had my axolotl, Francois, since August 2014. I am moving across the US for grad school and I cannot take him with me. I am wanting to sell him, his tank, and all of my current supplies to someone within the Kansas City area. I am asking here first, but if anyone has any recommendations for another place to post, please let me know. I really want to find a good home for Francois. Here is a link to an album of photos of him and his tank: https://imgur.com/a/BySgC6z [link] [comments] |
