Bittersweet shrimpery

Posted: 31 Mar 2019 11:51 PM PDT

I've been prepping my tank all month for shrimp, and put in a few shrimp hideouts because of my betta, getting levels to where I want them, and researching plants/food/decorations. I've been so excited ! But unfortunately, my betta thought the shrimp hides were betta hides, and he got himself wedged in one badly enough that he had to be put down. I'm super heartbroken over it, but the bittersweet part is that the future shrimp won't have to worry about the betta eating them. I put in my shrimp order tonight because I figure it'll take a little time for processing, and I'm so excited to finally get them and let them explore their new home. I'm just still so upset about my betta, even though it seems silly. I'm hoping it goes better than my past shrimp, but I'm also a lot more well informed and prepared for them thanks to the internet and this subreddit !! I ordered 10 cherry shrimp from the shrimp farm and I'm excited to see them. I almost ordered amanos or rillis along with them, but I'll stick to the cherries for now 9w9

Best nano aquarium for shrimp?

Posted: 31 Mar 2019 08:24 PM PDT

I want to get a nano aquarium any way from 10 gal to anything smaller for shrimp. I was wondering if there was any suggestions for keeping a nano shrimp planted tank as well. I have a successful planted tank with all plants that would have all the plants I should need but am wondering if there is any tips for the setting up of a shrimp specific nano aquarium(what smaller nano tanks are good). All tips are appreciated, but specifically substrate and tank. Thanks in advance :)

Are ghost shrimp nocturnal?

Posted: 31 Mar 2019 11:29 PM PDT

I have give or take 20 ghost shrimp in a (lightly) planted 20 gallon long tank. The plants are growing in slowly as I have no CO2 but the shrimp seem to enjoy the tank, I feed them algae wafers for them and my 4 snails. And I keep 11 Harley Rasboras along with my Betta Zeke as tank mates.

However I never see any of shrimp (neither the 20 ghost's or the 4 Cherry's) during the day. HOWEVER; as soon as the lights go off at 7 PM, they come out in droves. Swimming all along the front of the tank and plants, even in front of my Betta (who doesn't care at all) but they only come out at night.

Any reason why?

Tank finally cycled

Posted: 31 Mar 2019 05:08 PM PDT

So my tank finally finished cycling, I just ordered my shrimp. I did a big water change. Should I continue to keep dosing ammonia until they arrive? And then do another water change to lower my nitrates? My nitrates are currently at 5ppm.
