Mysterious bamboo shrimp death?

Posted: 11 Apr 2019 04:29 PM PDT

My beloved bamboo shrimp died yesterday and I'm trying to figure out why. He was doing just fine a couple days ago, then I noticed he was a little less active than usual. He was stretching his swimmerets and grooming a lot, so I figured he was about to molt soon (been about 1 month since the last molt). Then I came home from work to find him dead :(

I didn't see a molt in the tank, and he didn't have a white line across his back so I'm not entirely sure that it was a molting issue.

I kept him in a heavily planted 5g tank along with a colony of cherry shrimp and a couple nerite snails. Cherry shrimps and snails seem to be fine. The tank is about 6 months old and I had the bamboo shrimp for 3 months before he died.

Here are my parameters:

Ammonia 0ppm Nitrites 0ppm Nitrates 20ppm pH 7.2 KH 5 GH 19 Temperature 75F

I wanna make sure I fix any problems before getting another shrimp. Any ideas? Thanks!

General hardness test questions

Posted: 11 Apr 2019 08:29 PM PDT

Hi guys, I have got a bunch of cherry shrimp that had been breeding last year and now they either don't berry or shrimplets won't survive.

So I bought a fluval gh/kh test kit and trying to find out what's wrong with my water.

The instruction for gh says add 1 drop to 5ml of water and it should turn into pink. Then keep adding drops until the water turns blue.

Question 1 is, it says times the number of drops by 20 to get ppm. I counted 7 drops after the initial drop, thus 140 ppm (or mg/l) but what does this translate to? Everyone online says it is 5 to 8, so I think the unit must be different.

Question 2, after I add the initial drop, the water didnlt turn into a pink color, not until 4 drops later it turned into an visible pink.

And then 4 more drops it turned into blue, so how should count the drops? Is it number of drops after first drop? Or number of drops after it turned pink?

What kind of vegetables do you all feed your shrimp? Do they need to be boiled first?

Cherry Shrimp die out

Posted: 11 Apr 2019 09:35 AM PDT

My shrimp colony has been decaying since the last week. I've been checking the parameters constantly and all of them are within the acceptable range except ph that was at 7.8-8. Since the first test I've been doing regular water changes and ph is around 7.4-7.6. Help

Help! Berried CRS advice?

Posted: 11 Apr 2019 12:40 PM PDT

I have a CRS berried in my main tank. As soon as we saw the eggs we put her in a separate jar to keep an eye on her and the babies (covered with a fine mesh but with current from a small powerhead blowing through for circulation).

I've been reading up and it seems that the pH of this tank (7.4-7.6) isn't optimal for the babies. The two adults we have are doing fine, brightly coloured and active, but I'm worried the babies won't survive.

I have another tank with an active substrate which buffers the water to 6.6, which I've read is perfect for crystals, so I was thinking about transfering her to this one. The transfer shouldn't bee too stressful as she's already in an easily movable jar. My only issue is that this is a high-tech tank with CO2, which I've been told could also be problematic.

I don't have a problem cutting back the CO2, lighting and ferts for a while.

Any advice? Which is worse for them - high pH or CO2 injection?

Shrimp dying after successful molt?

Posted: 11 Apr 2019 07:17 AM PDT

My cherry shrimp have been dying after they molt? The molt is left behind and everything but then they seem to just pass away randomly. My last one that died molted like 3-4 days ago and died yesterday. 0 Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. 7.4 PH. The only thing that I can think of is my water is quite hard. It maxes out a API test strip, I have a GH water test kit coming with a TDS meter as well.
