RedSea Max nano auto top-off?

Posted: 25 Apr 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Hi, I'm new to saltwater and I was hoping to get the Red Sea max nano as a display tank. However, I will not be able to care for it on a regular basis as I will be in college and will only be home for the weekends. I read that the tank has an auto top off system that only lasts for three days and that would be a problem for me. Are there any "hi-tech" tanks that can be set up to be self-sufficient up to 15 days if I'm on vacation, etc..?

Suggestions for lighting?

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 10:51 PM PDT

I am about to pull the trigger on a Red Sea 525 but I'm debating whether to use their lighting or buy something else. They are switching to their own lights but I really enjoyed the connectivity and automation of AI lights or the shimmer from kessils. What would you guys recommend? Are their reefleds any good?

Help with cycling with live rock and live sand

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 06:42 PM PDT

Starting a 14 gallon tank after about 5 years of being out of the hobby. I purchased about 2lbs of live sand and 7 pounds of live rock. The fish store I purchased from is only a half an hour away so the rock and sand were fully submerged the whole trip. I mixed the live sand with about 5lbs of dry sand. I've been dosing Weiss organics bacter boost for 2 days now and haven't seen any ammonia or nitrates. I was wondering if I should just keep waiting to see if anything happens or maybe add a dead shrimp to bump up the ammonia. I'm using API saltwater test kits. Thanks!

Cycling Help

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 03:06 PM PDT

My tank has been going for a little over 2 weeks (20 Gallon). Dosed ammonia to 4ppm at first and used bio spira to start the cycling. After about a weekThe ammonia dropped to 0-0.25ppm but nitrites were 0 and nitrates were 40. I dosed ammonia again to 2ppm and it has dropped to 0-0.25 and nitrates are still high but I havent seen a spike in nitrites? Is the tank cycled? I'm just confused on how the ammonia dropped and my nitrates spiked without me seeing a spike in nitrites. (I'm using RODI water at 1.025 salinity)

Green star polyp with a 25000K light

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 06:47 PM PDT

So the GSP is one of the easiest corals to grow. Can anyone attest to that? I've seen that they can do well in any light, is a 32 Fluval Marine 25000K enough?

Second kessil a80 or a ai prime for a 10g reef?

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 12:00 PM PDT

I have a 10G reef with LPS/SPS and zoanthids. I plan on more sps, lps, and little softies. MAYBE acropora.

The lighting is 1 kessil a80. So far my birdsnest, trumpet are doing good, the monti cap that is brown is coloring up to a green.

Anyways, should I get a second kessil a80 (I love the shimmer) or a ai prime?

My assumption is that the ai prime will get better overall growth then the kessil but the kessil will get better aesthetics. Another worry is that the ai prime will kill the shimmer.
