My other chonkster

This was Toby. He lived 4 years and never grew bigger, just got fatter. When I put my hand in the tank he would swim right into it. He was very special but he’s swimming in the big pond in the sky now

Do you guys have any advice about feeding?

I have a tank with three fancies. They eat well, healthy, ect. They recently ran out of food, so I went to the store and got some. What the people at the store gave us before floated, and I know that isn't the best because they can consume air as well, so I got slow sinking pellets. This is where a bit of the dilemma comes in. I am new to goldfish, so I got gravel for the tank, because they didn't tell me at the store that they could choke. The gravel can fit in their mouths. Now they have to put it on their mouths to eat. Is it possible to change to sand if your fish are already in there? Are there any repercussions to changing the substrate? I only have one tank. Should I go back to floating pellets? Is the risk of them getting sick from swallowing air worse than them choking? Or should I just leave it? Thanks for your help.
