[AUTOPOST] CARESHEET, WIKI & WEEKLY HELP POST - April 15 to April 22

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 03:33 AM PDT

Welcome to r/bettafish!

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

Quick synopsis of caresheet:

  • Minimum tank size is 5 gallons (about 20 liters) for a regular sized betta, and 10 gallons (about 40 liters) for a king/giant betta

  • Bettas need an adjustable heater and a thermometer to ensure water temperature stays between 78-82°F or about 26-28°C

  • Bettas need a cycled tank- this requires a filter

  • Bettas need silk or live plants and hidey holes with no sharp edges.

  • Bettas have a special organ, the labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe air. They require constant access to air at the top of the tank.

  • Bettas will jump- it is best to have a tank with a lid

Click this link to view our WIKI

Quick synopsis of the wiki:

  • Contains info on basic betta care, diseases, potential tank mates, tail types/coloring, differences between males/females, ordering bettas, moving with bettas, setting up sororities and MORE!

  • This most likely has the answers to your questions. Feel free to ask questions if you are confused or aren't sure about something.

WEEKLY HELP POST

This is the place to ask anything and everything about bettas. Be sure to include your water parameters(ammonia/nitrite/nitrate,) tank size, how long the specific issue has been occurring, and some pictures if there is something which requires a diagnosis (e.g. fin rot/melt, velvet, dropsy.)

How do I upload pictures?

Go to imgur.com and select "New Post". Add all the clear pictures you have so we can better determine what is going on with your fish. It is recommended you set the album to private if you don't want weird comments. Click upload. From there, click the share button- if you are on mobile, hit "copy to clipboard" and paste the link into your comment on here. If on desktop, copy the link and paste it here.

For those new to technology- ctrl + c is copy, ctrl + v is paste.

To have your link like this, put these [ ] brackets around the text you want to show, with no space before the first word or after the last word, and without adding a space after the second bracket, use parentheses ( ) for the link, with no spaces between the parentheses or the link itself.

Be sure to read our rules before posting or commenting.

If your question was not answered yesterday, please feel free to post again!

Sick Fish - Please don't skip!

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting here...

My fish is sick! I think it's ick (ich?) but I would really appreciate any advice you can give me, I'm very clueless!

So a little background on Henry (feel free to skip): I saw some stupid kid shaking his cup up at Walmart - no employees or parents in sight. When I saw it happening I felt so bad that I waited for the kid to leave and grabbed his cup. He actually looked up at me and I felt my heart melt. Never had a fish before, so had no idea they'd look you in the face like that. Grabbed basic necessities and bought him that night. Everything has been one learning experience after another.

Now, the important stuff...
About a week ago I noticed him acting strangely (being more aggressive, he looped like he was droopy, and he wasn't eating as much). I got a good look at him and saw tiny white patches on the back of his neck. Googled it and found out about ick (ich?).

I WANT TO EMPHASIZE THIS:
I wouldn't be posting here if I suspected it was just ick, because I understand ick to be a very simple thing to treat.
Henry has started throwing himself against the walls of his tank and acting very confused and aggressive. He hits himself so hard on the walls that I can hear it across the room. I'm terrified for him and I feel so helpless.

Here are some pictures of his spots...

I've ordered these two items off Amazon and they should be here before the end of today:

API Super Ick

API AQUARIUM SALT Freshwater Aquarium Salt
(I read this could help him heal faster if I put a small amount in his tank)

I have since moved him into a clean 5 gallon tank to medicate him. I've never medicated a fish before.

Can you all please provide advice and guidance?

I don't want to lose him.
Thank you for reading.

How do I stabilize my PH?

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 11:36 AM PDT

My ph is currently all over the place, but never higher than 7.0, it just keeps getting lower and lower. I've had crushed coral in the tank for about 2 months, and this just started happening this week... I need suggestions and advice...😬
