So i found a breeder that sells axolotls in my country(Serbia), but shes kinda shady and is giving me a small buy window while trying to make me buy two axolotls. Just wanted to know if you can find them in some pet shops, just wanna know cause im gonna go to one tomorrow and i want to know what to expect.

My wild type axolotl turned pale overnight?

Posted: 04 Apr 2019 06:34 PM PDT

So we've had our wild type axolotl, Aristotlotl the Philosilotl (or Swimp for short) for about two years now. He's in a nice big 29 gallon tank and he's seemed pretty happy and healthy as long as we've had him, but he's suddenly and drastically changed color!

He was a very dark color, almost black and mottled, but now he's a much lighter gray today? Still speckled, I'm not sure if the patterning has changed at all (since he was so dark before, it wasn't really distinct).

Has anyone seen this happen before? I can probably edit this and add links to pictures later (this is literally my first reddit post so I really hope I'm doing this right!). My partner found a site saying this might just be a normal thing? He still seems just as alert and active as usual so far...

UPDATE: So he suddenly is back to his normal coloration??? I guess he's fine, but he sure confused and scared the hell out of us!! Just decided to be a different color for an hour!

Looking into getting an Axolotl

Posted: 04 Apr 2019 08:44 PM PDT

Hey all! So I have a 3 year old chameleon and Im now looking into getting another pet preferably aquatic. Ive read quite a bit into Axolotls and am leaning towards 2 with a tank divider of course. Are there any algea eaters that can be housed with them? And live plants? Substrate like slate? Or can sand be used at all? Would like to be informed before making a decision.

Proper sand?

Posted: 04 Apr 2019 08:41 PM PDT

My axolotl has been transferred to my home from the school as it was consistently getting sick. We took her to the vet and it turned out that she was accidentally eating the sand along with the worm. Additionally we found sand stuck in the filter. It was a much finer black "gravel" but it was basically slightly larger sand. We took all of it out, but we want to know the RIGHT kind of sand for this water friend. Also, how big must an enclosure be for 2 axolotls and where can we find those adorable hammocks? Thanks!

ID Help

Posted: 04 Apr 2019 04:55 PM PDT

Hey folks.... was hoping to get a little help with identification. While I was out the office yesterday this guy/girl was surrendered to our facility as a mudpuppy, Necturus maculosus. I have absolutely no previous experience with aquatic salamanders and it was pointed out to me on another forum that this fellow/lady was likely an axolotl.

It presents as a bit of a problem as we are an environmental education center focusing on native species and axolotls are decidedly not native to our region. I'd be highly appreciative of anyone's input and reasoning behind their determination of species.
