This guy was kept in a half gallon bowl for a year of his life in my friends and was fed mealworms (they have trouble digesting this) and he's loving his new life and will soon be introduced to his new tank mate

Help!!! Stressed/sick axie

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 05:06 AM PDT

Hi guys, I just got this tiny axolotl yesterday and he was swimming around happily and had eaten quite a bit during the day and overnight. Initially he had sand in his tank, but I heard that that wasn't suitable for juveniles so I took it out. This involved a 100% water change. He seemed fine last night after I'd changed it, but then when I woke up this morning he was laying in one corner of the tank with his tail curled. He hasn't moved from this position for a few hours and is refusing bloodworms. Upon closer inspection I've also noticed this stringy, fluffy white stuff near his gills and a bit behind his head. Is this he start of a fungal infection? Where do I go from here? I'm worried sick 😞

Getting my axolotls soon, need some help

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:20 AM PDT

So tomorrow I'm picking up my granddads aquarium. We're gonna leave some water in them, not everything but like 20%. And I was wondering, does the 2-week period where you have to have the aquarium running still apply then? Or is it at least less time?

Also, I have never owned any aquatic animals before, but I have done a lot of research, would it be better to get adults or could I handle babies?

Copper breeding genetics?

Posted: 11 Apr 2019 09:16 PM PDT

Can someone explain to me how to pair up axolotls to eventually produce copper babies? I have 2 females 1 wild type and one Lucy (lineage unknown, from the same clutch) and one baby golden albino that is hopefully a male lol.

Need advice! Curled gills, not eating :(

Posted: 11 Apr 2019 11:37 AM PDT

I'm sorry for the long post, I just want to flush out all possibilities of what could be wrong with my buddy :(

So my axolotl is about a month and a half old and I'm a little worried about him. For the first month or so he became very social, would eat blood worms right from my hands, and would even come up to the front of the tank when he heard my voice. It was so cute and we were vibing so well!

I live in university housing, so I had to take him home for spring break - I took the water out of the tank and placed him in a bucket with tank water (I only live 25 minutes away, so it wasn't a long drive for him) and then refilled the tank once I got home and put him back in and he was fine - still social and eating from my hands.

At that point he had been growing pretty quickly, so I tried to feed him an earthworm that didn't seem too big for him instead of the frozen blood worms - he ate it but once he got a hold of it it seemed too large for him, but I couldn't get it back from him, so I figured he liked it. It took him a while to finish it and afterwards he didn't move much and the next day he refused to eat anything from me.

I figured he wasn't hungry since the worm was so much larger than anything I've given him, but I kept putting bloodworms in his tank just in case. He didn't eat the rest of Spring Break (there were about 3 days left after I fed him the earthworm) and when I brought him back to my college apartment he was different.

It's now been nearly 3 weeks and I don't think he's eaten much at all - I usually feed him from my hand since he was so social in the beginning, but he refuses it every day and doesn't come to the front of the tank anymore when I talk to him, so I've been leaving the food in the front of the tank where I hope he will find it. I've been doing a mix of frozen bloodworms and small pieces of earthworm but I don't think he's eaten any earthworm, or bloodworm either. Now his gills are curled backwards and have barely any feathery part. I've been keeping the tank pretty clean, too, but I don't want to take out all the food in case he decides that he's hungry again. SOS I'm so worried about him and I feel helpless
