HELP! Axolotl left out of water. Posted: 13 Apr 2019 12:40 PM PDT Before we get into it I'll explain some background - - My roommate's axolotl (Jet) was in rough conditions. It was in a 10 gallon tank without a filter, substrate, hides, proper water conditioner, nothing. Poor Jet is a floater. In his previous tank, he lived with another axolotl, that was a little larger than him, I believe that they weren't fed nearly enough and the owner (roomates girlfriend) was gone nearly all day with long shifts at a hospital. The axolotls couldn't be monitored as much as they should have in this stage, and weren't fed very often. This of course was the first mistake, because Jet was being eaten! :( He had no limbs except one leg which had toes missing, and no gills. They decided to separate them once they'd found out that the other axie was putting jet in his mouth and swimming around the entire 10 gallons trying to gobble him down whole. I believe that this is where he first started floating. It could've been bacteria, or air, or a combination of both? I'm not entirely sure. But he was stranded on his back, belly out of the water for so long that his skin would dry out. So I took it upon myself to take care of him and get him upright again. I got a Tupperware container and a small strainer like object that I could place in the bowl so he could physically touch the bottom and walk around, whilst still having enough water covering his back. He was actually recovering greatly. He was eating, swimming, and wasn't flipping over anymore. But he was still floating up. I would fridge him, making sure the water temperatures weren't too cold, etc. Since he was so starved (basically on the brink of death being upside down and so bloated) he had lost a lot of weight from not eating. His torso is way smaller than his head, so I decided to fatten him up. I understand they don't eat when they're fridge, so here and there I'd place his container on my desk and let him get to a slightly warmer temperature, and then gingerly feed him some sinking pellets with a tweezers. He was a good eater, too. I'd feed him until he would reject the food (I read somewhere that they stop eating once they're full, so this is what I was doing) I would do this for a few nights and then I'd place him back in the fridge to recover more. This is where I screwed up. I forgot to close my door one night. He had a lid over him, slightly open so he could still breath. My boyfriend woke me up telling me he found him on the floor. He was missing the end of his tail, just the fleshy bit, so you could see his bone. He was looking extremely skinny. I'm not sure how long he was left out, but it could've been hours. I fridges him immediately. I started calling all of the vets around me, but none of them accept axolotls. I'm not sure what else to do from here, he was in a seriously bad condition and I'm scared that he might die. Any help would be very appreciated. TLDR; he was left out of water, cats got to him. Not sure how long he was left out but it must've been hours. I'm freaked out an am not sure what to do from this point, what can I do to help him recover? [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Apr 2019 12:03 PM PDT Thank you to everybody who helped me with my axy. I was just informed that our water in our taps did indeed change, and the ammonia was too high. I am sorry. [link] [comments]
Do axos need a bubbler if i have a sponge filter? Posted: 13 Apr 2019 11:53 AM PDT
Posted: 13 Apr 2019 11:06 AM PDT For at least 2 weeks now my Axolotl's back half has been floating up against his will. His water was around 70-71 degrees so I moved him to the basement where the temp dropped to 64 but he has still been floating. I got my water tested and everything was good accept the alkalinity and harness were high. I talked to two different pet stores and both said that my areas water had been like that recently and there was no way to treat it. I looked on google and think it might be constipation since I haven't seen poop in the tank since he started floating. Does anyone know anything I can do? He doesn't seem stressed, but I doubt he's very happy about his floating. [link] [comments] |
