Planning to get an axolotl.

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 07:21 AM PDT

Ok so i'm planning to get an axolotl but first I need to set up the tank. Is Ice good to keep the temp around 60-64 Fahrenheit? Also Should I leave the tank bottoms without sand or with sand. Also is Aqua Terra Aquarium & Terrarium Sand, 5-lb bag safe for the axolotls. Also any tips for taking care of Axolotls. I will post more if I need more help on getting the tank ready.

Anyone have any luck breeding dwarf shrimp with their axolotls?

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:46 AM PDT

I am starting up a new tank and I am currently in the cycling stage. It is a 40 gallon tank and I was hoping I could Breed Red Cherry or Ghost shrimp in the same tank as my axolotl. A staff member at the local pet store said that my water might be too cold for the shrimp to breed even if i grew enough plants/setup hides for the shrimp to escape the hunting axolotl.

Axolotl dying?

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 07:04 AM PDT

Hey everyone, so I've had my Axolotl for about 5 months now and just recently he's started laying on his back and side.

Initially I thought he was dead and was very confused as I use clean dechlorinated water no substrate and just a few aquarium decorations.

If I move him around his legs twitch a bit and eventually he'll swim right side up but he isn't eating and every morning he's back to floating on his back.

What do I do here? Is he just dying or it's something I can do to help him out?

I decided to put sand in my axies tank again. It's been about 9 months since she last had it and today I caught her with a mouth full of sand. I'm so sad her tank looks so good with sand! *Light on just for picture

Axolotl stressed when cleaning tank

Posted: 29 Apr 2019 07:56 PM PDT

My axolotl stays to one corner of his tank and of course it gets very messy in that corner. Whenever I try to clean it he freezes up and try's to slowly back away. He won't even eat until long after. Is there something I can do to help him get used to it?

White fuzz on axolotl

Posted: 29 Apr 2019 09:03 PM PDT

I noticed a few fuzz balls on my axolotl today. One on her head and a couple on her body. I was able to easily suck them off her with a Turkey baster. I also noticed a few white fuzzy growing on moss ball and filter intake that i also removed. I am using pimafix in the tank just in case. Should i be worried? She is eating and acting normal.

I've been preparing to get 1-2 axolotls, now I have 3!

Posted: 29 Apr 2019 12:51 PM PDT

I've been researching, and got a 28 gallon set up and cycled. Started looking for axolotls this weekend. I found 3 axolotls in a 55 gallon tank with a few accessories, like hides, a light, sand, and a few other things. She didn't want to sell just 1 or 2, needed the whole thing gone. So we decided to get it. Originally I thought maybe i would keep the 2 females and rehome the male, and sell the 55. However, we found a spot for it after all. They are about 1.5 years old. 1 female is a Leuci, the other a white Albino, and the male is either Wild or Black Melanoid. The seller said he's a Wild, but he looks more like Black Melanoid to me. I'll have to post pics once i get the tank looking a bit better. They are tame and pretty healthy looking, as far as I can tell. The Leuci and the male are siblings. I'd kinda like to keep them all, but how do I handle the breeding situation? I'm not sure I want to breed at all, and I know I don't want to breed the siblings. I hate to get rid of the male, since they all get along, and he does seem to have a good personality.

Let’s see those tank photos! In major need of inspiration.

Setting up tanks is almost as fun as bringing home the tenants! I'm working on my first axolotl tank but can't decide how I want to decorate. I plan to use pool filter sand for the substrate and throw in live plants. Need ideas on some hides/caves. Thanks in advance! Can't wait to see those tanks. :)
