tips for moving tanks?

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 08:28 AM PDT

hello! i just got my first axlotl (technically he is for a friend but we r roommates and my little sister named him and also i love him so much his name is cherry) and right now i am keeping him in a big bowl with treated tap water until i can make the 3 1/2 hour drive back to his new home. he is eating fine, and is about 4 inches long. my roommate has his tank set up and has some moss balls and a few more live plants but i am wondering the best way to get him into his tank. do i just dump him in??? that seems like the wrong thing to do

Do aquariums smell?

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 06:25 AM PDT

So I have been trying to talk my girlfriend around to the idea of me getting an axolotl, and one of the things that is a sticking point is the potential smell of an aquarium with a live amphibian in it. I have read that you don't wipe down the glass much so that healthy bacteria can build up and that axolotls excrete a lot of waste. With the right kind of filter is there a noticeable smell to the aquarium?

"Can your things eat this?" Yes, dear brother, they CAN in fact eat a giant nightcrawler

How to cycle a new tank?

Posted: 21 Apr 2019 08:18 AM PDT

I've had my Axolotl in a 10 gallon since I got him and just got a 20 gallon to move him into. Is there any way to cycle the new tank using what I have already? I read that I could just transfer the sand and some water into the new tank but that seems to easy to be true.

Converted to a sand bottom today! What a chore, but love it so far. Got a bunch more plants on the way now that I can bury them (Java Fern, Jungle Val, and more moss balls) . Any other ideas?

Help on fighting a fungus infection

Posted: 20 Apr 2019 09:17 PM PDT

I've been fighting a fungus infection in one of my lotls for a little while now. It'll clear up then randomly show up. I treat it, it stays for a bit then goes away, then next thing i know its back. Now my other lotl has a spot and im not sure what to do. Last time i tested the water (yesterday) it was 0 nitrites, 7.6 pH, 0.25 ammonia, 0.5 nitrates. I know im not suppose to have any ammonia but i just recently got it back down really low and am working to make it 0. Can anyone give me any advice to keep the fungus away for good? Thank you!

Do y’all have any online sites that you purchase your plants from?

I'm looking for small amazon swords, java moss, alternanthera reineckii, and anubias nana.

This stuff keeps settling on the floor and hides in my tank and I was wondering if it’s super bad or not. It hasn’t affected the water chemistry at all.
