Does anyone know much about Nerite snails? Posted: 20 Apr 2019 11:27 PM PDT I feel like there's not much real information on these freshwater snails at all aside from the basic "they eat algae and breed a lot" Even with Nerites there's so much conflicting information on forums that has all been proven wrong by people who have had success breeding them. For example, common things people say are that Nerites cannot breed in freshwater, that eggs never hatch in freshwater, etc. But eggs can and do hatch in freshwater, it is just that the babies do not survive in most freshwater. https://www.applesnail.net/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=18327 This thread is by far the most informative thread I've seen regarding the snails. Other reports of breeding simply had people sticking eggs into saltwater then reducing the salt content of the water slowly as the snails matured. This guy had them in freshwater (mostly because he didn't know about the saltwater requirement) but the veligars still grew... he mentions in later posts that the tapwater where he lives is so hard that you see white minerals floating about in the water when first put into a container, and that it needs time to settle. (No idea where he lives, but probably not anywhere in the US). He mentions that perhaps the snails simply need a high KH and GH water to survive, since saltwater does have high amounts of calcium and other minerals in it. Perhaps it's not so much the salt as it is the hardness of it that they need for development? Anyway, the only thing this thread has no information on is why they tend to leave tanks. I feel there has to be a reason for it as most other freshwater snails do not really do the same, except to maybe lay eggs before returning to the tank. I also did get into an argument with someone regarding these snails and that led me to do some heavy googling. Turns out that a lot of these freshwater snails sold in the trade are actually primarily wild caught brackish water snails simply marketed as freshwater... they can obviously survive in freshwater, but it does limit their lifespan to a year or two instead of longer as it should be if they lived in brackish waters. Honestly wish there was more information on these creatures, but I guess studying snails isn't really on a high priority list in any lab out there haha. [link] [comments] | ||

Best places online to buy rare mystery snails? Posted: 20 Apr 2019 05:14 AM PDT What's your go-to place to buy snails online? I'd prefer to shop from a store rather than buy from someone on Reddit (just because I've heard horror stories about improper shipping, etc). I'm looking for some of the more rare colored mystery snails that I can't find at my LFS. Is eBay good for this kind of stuff? TIA! [link] [comments] |
