Was going to tear down my tank after The Nightmare, but then I noticed something...

I'm the owner of the tank that was poisoned. The story is in this post and it is quite depressing. I had purchased a bulb from an eBay company with amazing reviews. The bulb was only in my tank for a few hours and when I checked on the tank, everyone was spazzing or seizing. I lost all sorts of shrimp: Red and Carbon Rili's, Yellow and Blue Neo's, and Red Cherries. I also witnessed a lot of my babies dying (most of whom were only 4 days old). After I performed all life saving measures that I could think of, I grilled the company and they admitted that they had sprayed for mosquitoes and a lot of their own shrimps had died as a result. It was the most disheartening shrimp experience in my life.

Anyway, today was the day when I was going to tear down the tank. The last 3 remaining adult shrimp had died and I didn't see any life beyond snails. I set up a hospital tank for the snails and was ready to end the nightmare. I was done with shrimp keeping.

So the weekend finally rolled by and I turned on the tank light, knelt down, and peered in to what could've been. That's when something caught my eye...

It couldn't be... a shrimp moult?! It definitely wasn't there the day before, or the previous 8 days since the last adult shrimp had passed. I scanned the whole tank and couldn't find anything. Then I decided to look up at the Dwarf Water Lettuce. And there it was. A baby...

I don't know how this little one escaped my attention for so long, but it did. I went absolutely bonkers. I acted like a crazed paparazzi and immediately started snapping pictures when suddenly... I saw movement in the corner of my eye. Lo and behold, ANOTHER BABY!

I don't know they survived the "Nuke Bulb". I don't know how they even survived the 80% water change either, but they have. Even the snails poop that started collecting after I neglected the tank in the last week or so. They have survived it all. I'm so damn excited that I now have 100+ new baby shrimp pictures. That's not even all the great news though. I found 3 other babies roaming around in the sand. There's a chance that there could be more, which is such a thrilling possibility!

I'm not sure how to proceed because I'm afraid that I might kill these little ones. I might do another water change and carbon/charcoal replacement after another week and continually do them to ensure all toxins are out. I do not plan on getting any more shrimp until these guys survive a few months (I'm thinking 6-7). I'll definitely take any advice if anyone else has been in a similar situation before.

Anyway, I'm so excited, it's like Christmas all over again! I was 100% done with shrimp keeping, but I guess it's not done with me!

Edit: misspelled word.

How to sort out my shrimp?

Posted: 30 Mar 2019 01:39 AM PDT

So... I started with about 8 cherry red shrimp and now I have several hundred. The vast majority are juvenile or only just adult. How can I catch and sort them without risking hurting them too much?

Ultimately I want to be able to sort out the best ones for breeding/keeping and move the rest on to new homes, broadly sorted by size/age.

I'm pretty sure I can make a workable shrimp trap, but what do I do once I have caught them? Any trap that's baited with food will catch dozens of juveniles of different sizes, as well as older, bigger shrimp. The young ones are so small and presumably fragile I worry about accidentally hurting them. I also am concerned that the older breeding females will get stressed out and might lose their eggs.

Has anyone here figured out how to sort and handle shrimp in a safe way?

Colored molt?

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 03:50 PM PDT

Last weekend I added a few new shrimp to my tank including a ruby red taiwan bee, I've only ever seen clear molts before and almost panicked seeing an orange molt. I assume its from the new ruby red and its normal for it. Is there any reason to be concerned about colored molts?

Maybe this time! Lol

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 06:15 PM PDT

Over a year ago, I bought some cherry shrimp and some amanos. The cherry shrimp did almost immediately. The amanos I still have 2 of them despite some things happening that I thought for sure would have killed them. They never bred when there were more of them because I think they were all male.

Today I stopped by Petco and they had just gotten a shipment of fish in. They had ghost shrimp in one of the boxes. I bought the whole bag, which was about 20 Shrimps. (25 shipped but I only paid for 19 because a couple didn't make it)

I'm hoping this time I can get a colony started. I have tons of plants (both mosses and stem plants) and so many hiding places and except for my female betta all my fish are very small and docile. The betta doesn't care about shrimp. She just cares about irradicating things that are colorful... Lol.

Question on API KH/GH test kit

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 08:55 AM PDT

Hi, newbie here working on a new tank. No shrimp yet. Cycling.

I have the API test kit for KH and GH. My question is, as you are adding drops and watching for the color change (yellow and green, respectively, I think) do you count the drops until the color does change, even though it's a pale color or do you add drops until the color is clearly, vibrantly that color and then assess?

thank you!

New to shrimp

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:05 PM PDT

So I just picked up 4 cherry shrimp. They're in a 2.5 gallon filtered, heated gravel bottom tank with a java fern, a couple small marimo balls, a small anubias, and an aponogeton. I regularly change the water at least once a week (25-50%). I feed my betta 5-6 pellets a day and usually only feed one at a time, so there isn't too much waste at the bottom. Should I be feeding my shrimp their own food, or will they be alright eating the betta's waste?

Questions about interbreeding within the same line

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 03:36 PM PDT

So I have a colony of Blue Dreams. Their color is quite faded into a light blue. I have spoken with the breeder and confirmed that these shrimp come from the chocolate line. If I introduce some chocolates to the tank with intent of interbreeding for darker blue dreams, will they start throwing WT shrimp? Or becuase they are from the same line I won't get WT?

Not sure how this works, and quite new to the hobby. Please advise :)

Brine Shrimp

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 08:00 AM PDT

What should my brine shrimp be eating?

I hatched a pouch of brine shrimp eggs two weeks ago in a 10-gallon saltwater tank, plenty of natural light, filtration, aeration. About half actually hatched; the others are growing well and active.

I plan to keep some as classroom pets, and some as food for my goldfish and hermit crabs. I'm feeding the brine shrimp some crushed betta flakes and crushed algae wafers right now: what will keep them healthy and growing long term?

Ammonia high but everything looks alive

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 02:39 PM PDT

I have had a shrimp tank for about a month now, and a week ago my apple snail stopped moving. Tested the water and to my horror the ammonia tested at 10ppm. The ph was neutral and nitrate and nitrite also 0. I have live plants, red cherry shrimp (6), and only the one apple snail. The tank is only 3 gallons; it's just a little thing I have on my desk. Once I realized the ammonia was so high we started doing 25% water changes every other day. Ammonia has decreased but is still high.

Everything looks alive in the tank and the shrimp are moving. The snail is moving more as well.

Any ideas as to why the ammonia is still high?

Aborted Berries?

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:06 AM PDT

I got a handfull of rcs and they were pretty immediately berried. The eggs got quite large and i was sure they were going to hatch...but they didn't. One berried mother died, and i think the rest dropped their eggs.

Its been two weeks since then, nobody else has died but I don't see any breeding activity.. definitely have a mix of males and females still.

Dunno what happened. Any advice?
