Just nuked my shrimps....(sad day)

Posted: 12 Mar 2019 07:57 PM PDT

EEEEEFFF, used GE 2+ on a sump. wiped out half of my breeding shrimp, killed many of my plants roots, and 100% of the snails in my planted tank. Its day two, it dawned on me what i had done. changed tank water with RO water twice in hopes of diluting whatever was in there. I imagine i have also destroyed any beneficial bacteria as well. Looks like many water changes ahead of me. Odly all of my deaths were my adult shrimp, while I lost many little ones, many of them survived so fare. A few days will tell though, I may loose all of them after all.

I have taken the sump out to break it down clean it and re-calk it.

The labeling on the tube is MISLEADING, big words 100% SILICONE, with smaller words mold resistance and an even smaller 2+ in top left corner.

look out aquarium lovers!

RCS shrimplets survival question

Posted: 13 Mar 2019 01:28 AM PDT

I have a 10 gallon, heavily planted tank. It has been setup for almost 7 months now. Initially it had a betta with some amanos, then I got some RCS and removed the betta. Initially it was a rough start, as I refurnished the room and switched the aquarium stand, so I had to empty the tank in December (left only a couple of inches of water to be able to move it without removing the shrimp). I lost some shrimp, maybe because of the stress.

Long story short, the remaining 14-15 RCS were able to settle and finally I got the first berried females a couple of months ago. Since then it has been a parade of berried females. Unfortunately, I've not seen the number of shrimplets that I was expecting. I can see 4-5 shrimplets of 2 different generations, but not more. Once in a while I could be able to distinguish some newborns, but then I can hardly detect any.

On two different occasions I have noticed shrimplets twitching in the water with what it looked like a molt still attached to their head. This could last for some seconds, the shrimplet goes up and down, then in a fraction of a second I could not see it anymore. Once I thought it could be Hydra, so I was able to catch one and see with a magnifying glass. Fortunately it was it's molt.

Currently there are still a couple of berried females, but I want to see if anyone have experience with this low number of shrimplet survival rate and what can I do to improve the situation?

Currently the tank has the following parameters:

pH: ~7 GH: 6 KH: 2-3 TDS: 220 Temp: 23C (73-74F)

Ammonia/nitrite/nitrate: 0

I use RO water with SaltyShrimp GH/KH+. I used to do 10% WC each week, but have switched to every 2-3 weeks now. Evaporated water is replaced with RO water every day. The filter is a small sunsun hw-603b. There is a lot of mixed plants in the tank that cover almost 80% of the surface. Also there is a couple of pothos plants that hang on the back.

The tank has some 10 RCS (including the surviving shrimplets, cannot count more), ~10 green babaultis and 4-5 tigers. I feed each day by alternating between blanched spinach, kale, Bacter AE, spirulina, soy husks, crab cuisine, bee pollen. Also there are a couple of indian almond leaves at all times in the water.

Why my volcano shrimps are grouping at the water heater like this? Does anyone know the reasons? I put food next to them and they didn't even care (usually they go right into the food)... Thanks.

Does anyone else feel special when they reach into their shrimp tank for something and their shrimp don’t swim away?

Posted: 12 Mar 2019 07:36 AM PDT

Like either they zoot away like aaahh!! Or they just sit there completely still. I feel trusted.

Is my shrimp dead or did it molt?

Posted: 12 Mar 2019 03:01 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I have a 10 gallon tank with a betta fish and a snail. I recently added 3 ghost shrimp to the tank as a sort of trial run and two of them have been messing for the last 2 days.

Today I was looking at the tank a little more closely and I noticed what looks like the exoskeleton of 2 of the shrimp but I'm not sure if it's a molt or if it's just the remains of shrimp that fell victim to my betta. It's the same color as the shrimp but it doesn't have any eyes, although where the eyes would normally go doesn't look torn. It looks like the little antennae are still there too as well as the legs but there's a gash in the side of both of them and there is absolutely no insides in either of them.

I haven't witnessed my fish being aggressive to the shrimp so I'm really hoping that this is just the shrimp molting but I really don't know. Unfortunately I can't really get a good photo to show it.

How easy is it to breed from mixed quality to high quality shrimp colour?

Posted: 12 Mar 2019 11:00 AM PDT

At the moment my cherry shrimp are very mixed in quality (I got them from different places to ensure genetic diversity), ranging from medium-grade cherries to a couple of solid fire reds.

Most of the babies so far look like medium to -high grade cherries (they're still too small to see what the final colours will be like). So I was wondering...if I'm consistent about removing lower grades to a seperate tank, how long will it take to get a stable population of fire red quality shrimp?

Thanks! 😊
