Food for babies?

Hi Reddit! I'm having a problem and don't know what to do! My axolotls laid eggs unexpectedly (thought I had two males, we've had them five years and nothing happened!) and I kept about 25 of them. I've followed all instructions I could find on taking care of the eggs, and all but about 5 that didn't form correctly in their eggs hatched successfully and are all still alive. They hatched Saturday evening 3/23. I had ordered brine shrimp eggs a while ago, and when they started to hatch I started the first batch of eggs the same day (Saturday). They were supposed to take 18-36 hours to hatch, but Tuesday rolled around and they were all still eggs. I started a new batch, but by Thursday these didn't hatch either. I started a THIRD batch last night, but I'm getting desperate. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or maybe just received a bad batch, but I need to know an alternate food to give the babies! It's been almost a week since they hatched. They are about 1/2 - 3/4" long. Would they be able to try bloodworms? Do they sell already-hatched brine shrimp at pet stores (like petsmart)? What do I do, help!

Hey guys, I want to get an axolotl and I want to do it right!

Posted: 28 Mar 2019 08:22 PM PDT

I want to get an axolotl sometime this year, and would like to save up so money isn't a question and I can buy my little bby the best!

I know things vary, but if anyone could give me rough estimate of how much I should save up, just as an idea.

Also, how much for the axolotl itself (typically or in your experience), and where do you find them?

Setting up an axolotl tank soon, how powerful of an air pump do I need for a 20 gallon long aquarium? And other questions

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 02:17 AM PDT

I have almost everything I need to get my tank set up, but it's occured to me that the air pump I bought might not be strong enough.

I ordered this pump off Amazon because I liked that it had two air outlets as I wanted to hook it up to both a sponge filter and an air stone. After some further reading however I notice that this pump is only recommended to tanks up to 7.9 gallons.

According to the stats on the Amazon page, the flow rate for a single air outlet on that pump is 16 gallons per hour. I know axolotls prefer low flow but it's also my understanding that in aquariums you traditionally want a filter with a flow rate high enough to completely turn over all the water in your tank several times in an hour.

Can anybody with a little more experience give me some advice? If my air pump is too weak can anybody recommend a better one that won't break my budget?

Also, since I'm already asking some pretty noob-ish questions, is a ph of 8.2 too high? I tested my water and straight from the tap my ph is 8.2 and my kh and gh are both under 50ppm. I know there's stuff you can buy to add to the water to adjust hardness and buffer the ph to where you want it but from what I've read it seems like it might be better not to mess with that stuff. Can anybody confirm or deny?

Need some help!!

My axo is 7 inch long not sure how old but she hasn't eaten anything in 2 weeks now. Shes by herself in a 29 gallon tank, pereamaters are good. Her left side of her stomach is a bit bigger than the right. Her gills are full and her color is normal. I've tried feeding red wiggles, blood worms, and night crawlers and she's turned them all down. Anyone have any ideas what could be going on? TYIA

How many pellets should I be giving my axolotl?

Posted: 28 Mar 2019 05:18 PM PDT

One of the Axolotls we have doesn't seem particularly interested in the food we've given him thus far. We've tried bloodwoom cubes and night crawlers, and over about a period of a week and a half, I've only managed to get him to eat one night crawler. I found out from his breeder yesterday that he was being fed Hikari sinking carnivore pellets, so I'm going to grab some of those today. I'm just not sure how many I should be giving him, and whether or not I should feed him daily or every other day like we do we our female (he's a little under 1 year old).
