Do you really need to feed your Koi/pond fish?

I've been talking with some koi/pond experts and most of them tell me to cut waaay back on feeding and/or that you really never have to feed your fish, even during the summer as they'll get what they need from the algae and other things in the water, especially in SoCal where algae grows easily year round.

I bought a house with 13 koi and 2 goldfish in about 600 gallon pond, the koi range from 4-16 inches. Per the prior owner's instructions I was feeding 2 tablespoons of mostly crushed pond sticks twice a day (she did almost everything wrong with the house, so there's that). Now, I'm only feeding 2 tablespoons once a WEEK. They're all still alive, seem healthy, water is very clear, they just seem less active. They stay at the bottom and chill more than they used to and don't come up to beg for food very time a human silhouette is there.

What's everyone else's feeding regimen like? Does anybody feed this infrequently?
