Bought a house with a multi level pond, need help Posted: 25 Mar 2019 06:10 AM PDT We just purchased a home with what was at time a functioning pond. I'd like to get it up and running as mosquitoes will also be kicking in full swing with spring. Ponds have a fair layer of leaves on the bottom which obviously need to be cleaned and a nice layer on top of green small leafy growth. It came to life yesterday afternoon with frogs croaking all at once, so it's supporting some life. What I can tell you. Ponds: Upper - about six to eight feet around. Depth at edge is about 18-24" Lower - oval, probably twelve feet or so. Upper has three stepped waterfalls flowing into lower, about two feet wide. Water is roughly four feet deep at waterfall pour in. It's also 18-24" at edges. I don't know if there's a center drain. There are two hoses going into the lower pond, they come out and go underground. My son was using a stick messing around pulling out leaves and did find one of the hoses right near the edge of the lower. At the level of the upper pond, there's a large storage container, which is half full of biospheres. Then there's a layer of some filtering media on top, and I removed the added bonus of the squirrel nest. Into that container, I believe there are two hoses. Which are coming from the direction of the lower pond. Is that enough info to have you guys get me started? Obviously I need some sort of filtering setup and a waterfall pump? Or can my filter out flow go to the upper pond? There are no pumps left by the previous owner. He did say that it functioned with one pump, but if you wanted to put on a show, you need to run a pump for the waterfall. Edit: thought of more info. The hoses I believe are 2". I am handy, so I'm not adverse to building a filter setup, or reviving what he had if that will save some money. Although the bin isn't UV stable and feels chalky so I'll probably replace it with another container if that's the route to take. Edit 2: here's the gallery, I grossly underestimated the size. Hifin Chinese Banded Shark in Pond? Posted: 25 Mar 2019 12:41 PM PDT I was at a fish store the other day and the issue of high amounts of algae in my pond was brought up. The salesperson said that they thought I should get a Hifin Chinese Banded Shark or two to potentially naturally combat the issue. I have done my research and honestly have not found a whole lot of useful info and am curious why my local pond stores have both been mum on the subject. I live in Colorado where the weather is supposedly not going to be an issue for the fish (based on what the fish store guy says). Has anyone on here put these in their ponds or is there a big "no no no" that I am missing? The pond has 13 Koi and I am planning on a rebuild this spring with a new depth of 6', a bottom drain and no substrate at the bottom. The pond gets A LOT of sun with no shade as the trees are still very young, hence the heavy algae build up. [link] [comments] |
