Lifelong addictions start early. My daughter's tank finally cycled and her first fish is in.

Any reefers interested in a 1 gal complete reef?

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 01:22 PM PST

So I have been fascinated with the .2 gal mini complete aquarium that people are turning into tiny reef tanks. I want to take this idea to the next level with a 1 gal reef that has everything a normal setup has. This includes sump, heater, skimmer, reactor and fuge. I plan to make the tank, reactor and skimmer out of glass and use 3d printing to make the custom pieces needed.

Just wondering if the community would be interested in something like this if it actually works. So far I'm still in the CAD design phase but if people are interested I would be open to posting my progress and possibly making a couple for "beta testers".

Layout currently is a 6"x6"x5" cube display sitting directly on top of the 6x8x3.5 base holding the sump.

Setting up a QT from an existing tank?

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 10:21 PM PST

I'm planning on upgrading to a reefer xl 525 pretty soon which leaves my current Nuvo Fusion 30l free to finally set up a proper qt. Once everything is cycled and ready to go on the reefer, I want to move my rocks, fish, and corals over. How should I go about keeping my 30l running as a qt?

Should I buy some marine pure blocks to keep bacteria running in the tank or keep some of my current rocks in?

Should I remove all my sand?

Should I only run it when I have new marine life I would like to add to the new setup or always have it ready just in case something goes wrong in the reefer?

Would really appreciate some tips if anyone has some. Thanks!

Lost my first fish (R.I.P Royal Gramma)

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 08:51 PM PST

I got my first fish, a royal Gramma, almost three weeks ago. Other than being being a bit shy at first, it ate readily and seemed to be doing well. Several days ago though I noticed some white spots, at first I wasn't too alarmed because I hadn't been able to get a close look and thought it could just be sand particles or something, but shortly afterwards, I realized it was obviously ich. Eventually I was able to get it transferred to a hospital tank with medication, but less than 48 hours later it was dead.

Needless to say i'm pretty bummed to lose my first ever salt water fish, especially because with the exception of a hair algae problem which has now largely died down, everything else seems to be going relatively well. It will be at least a few weeks until I will be able to add fish again, so this is the first really bad thing that has happened thus far.

Anyone know what this is? Small brown circle, thin, and slightly translucent. Removed 2 or 3 already.

Looking for a new goby/shrimp pair. Any suggestions or species to stay away from?

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 09:36 AM PST

Hey everyone,

I recently lost the diamond goby I had in my 40 gallon breeder. I really enjoy having any kind of sand sifting goby to help keep the bed turned over. I have a two clowns, a coral beauty, and a 6 line wrasse. I also have a few corals: hammer, torch, zoas, and favia. Most of the corals are frags. Any tips or suggestions of a good combo would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

This looks like a trumpet coral but it’s hard and super slow growing. Could it be something else?

After only two days my clown has chosen my long tentacle plate coral to be his home.
