Introducing the younger axolotls with the older axolotls

Posted: 03 Feb 2019 09:33 AM PST

I have a wild type and a dirty Lucy axolotl that are 11 months old and about 6.5-7 inches long that share a tank with a divider with a copper axanthic(7 months) and a gfp copper(6 months). The two younger ones are 5.5-6 inches long. Do you think it will be safe to remove the divider. The gfp copper is much thinner than the others since he was sick a bit back and wasn't eating. There has never been signs of aggression with any of them. They are in a 55 gallon tank.

I want to add them together so I can update the tank decor and add the hammocks, sand, and new plants I purchased.

Axolotl not eating :/

Posted: 03 Feb 2019 08:41 AM PST

Hi everyone, I've had my axolotl, Kirby for about a year now and the last couple of days he's stopped eating properly. I feed him fish fuel co. frozen axolotl food, supplemented with blood worms every now and then, which he has never had a problem with before. I usually feed him a third of a block of food every day (I'm trying to get him to put a little bit of weight on), which he usually gobbles down.

I just tested my water, nitrates and nitrates are zero, as is chlorine. Everything else is perfect as well (the water is a little hard but this is okay for axies). He's in a 60L tank with fine sand substrate, which I maintain at about 18°C. This is on the high side of what it should be but it's as low as I can keep it in the summer (I live in Australia). I also offered him a live earthworm today which he wasn't interested in at all.

About a week ago I had a serious issue with algae in his tank, but I did a huge water change and moved the tank away from the window so that shouldn't be a problem anymore.

Sorry that this is so long, I wanted to make sure I included everything that could possibly have an effect. Thank you in advance for any suggestions/help!

Oil on the surface

Posted: 03 Feb 2019 03:07 AM PST

Hi I noticed that my Axolotls have an oil layer on the surface of their water is it dangerous? What does it mean? And most importantly how do I get rid of it😕?

New baby axolotl likes to drift?? Is he okay?

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 06:42 PM PST

I just put my new 2 inch baby axolotl in his new tank. I acclimated him to the water before putting him in. He likes to just sit still and drift in the water for a few seconds, then swim a little, then drift, then swim, then drift... is this normal? Is he just tired?

Axolotl jumped out while changing tank - advice?

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 04:58 PM PST

I'm a little panicky but hoping to get a little advice! Thank you in advance.

My axolotl has been growing pretty quickly in the last few weeks (he ate his tankmate.... so now he is around 3-4 inches) so we were upgrading him to a larger container. He jumped out when were placing him into the new tank and fell onto the tile floor (maybe a little over a 2 foot drop) and flopped around while I picked him up and dropped him into his new tank.

I don't see any damage, but is there anything internally that I should be worried about that could have been affected? If so, are there any signs I should keep an eye out for?

Starterbacteria

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:46 AM PST

Hey guys,

I just put my aquarium together and in the store they told me, that I could use starterbacteria. Please keep in mind that I am from Germany. So now I wanted to ask, if these starterbacterias can be toxic for my axolotls. They also have axos in the store but I don't know if the also used it. What should I do?

Slate bottom? River rock? Help?

Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:37 PM PST

Hello all! I'm not new to the fish-keeping hobby, but I'm getting my very first axie in the mail soon! It's 4 inches long, so I know not to put it on any type of sand, but I don't want to do bare bottom either. What does everyone use instead? If it's slate, where do you get it? Is any old slate like from Home Depot aquarium safe? I'm heading out tomorrow to look around.

BTW: The tank is already cycled, I just haven't decorated it yet, before anyone gets worried, lol.
