How do you set up a snail tank from scratch? Posted: 02 Feb 2019 07:45 PM PST Hello. In these last few months I've been thinking about setting up a snail tank, and a few days ago I brought home some elodea from my university, and to my delight some snails hitched a ride. I have been keeping the elodea and snails in a container that is almost one gallon. Today I found an old 5gal that hadn't been in use for a few years, and cleaned the heck out of it. I used some vinegar to clean the stains, washed it off thoroughly, and currently have the empty tank in my room. The 1gal(?) where everyone is currently residing has three snails that have long, thin black shells, while the other three or four are regular pond snails. (I know they can be considered pests but I am very fond of them). I put in a bit of potato peels for them and they've eaten from it for the last four days or so. All the water they have came from their original pond, and I've not changed it for fear that any water I add will kill them. So, now I ask, what should I do? I need to get substrate for the tank, but what can i do to fill it and add the snails, elodea and such? Can I use normal dechlorinate with tap water, let it sit, and then add everything? Should I let it cycle?? All help/advice is hugely appreciated. I have been able to keep the snails happy where they are right now but very much want to change them to a bigger environment.
