Goldfish - Aquariums - Got my 2 new goldies a 70 gallon tank and 2 HOB penguin 350 filters. Just put them in the tank after living in a bowl for 3 weeks, cycling water. Did a lot of reading on this sub. Thanks for educating me on how to take care of these creatures. Redid the tank’s silicone myself too. What do you think?

Update on my dying oranda....

Posted: 15 Jan 2019 08:30 PM PST

He's better! He's swimming around and eating, he also seems more interested in me when I walk by the tank. I am going to start over on my goldfish keeping skills after what I just did to myself, and to my fish. I will change water every week, and post my levels either on my reddit directly, or on this subreddit just so I can give myself a goal to do and be on task. I will also be getting my lonely boy someone new, but they will come in maybe a couple of months or longer, I want to make sure I am totally ready to take in a new fish as if it is my own child since I am responsible for its life. Thanks to everyone who knocked some sense into me and helped me with my fish. Samekichi thanks you too

My Rusty is having problems...

My Rusty is having problems...

So, I made some dumb mistakes, and my three-year-old fancy is suffering for it. He doesn't seem to be faring terribly well at the moment. He's a big boy, but he is usually pretty active as far as moving freely around his 30 gal tank. But the last couple of days his tail had been droopy, and he's mostly been laying at the bottom of his tank. He's always been prone to issues, but lethargy has never been one of them. I think my stupid, selfish impulsive actions are killing him...And I'm so lost about how to help him.

Advice on how to remove nitrates. High amount in tap water

Posted: 15 Jan 2019 03:54 PM PST

Hi all,

I am struggling to keep the nitrates under control in my tank (30 gallon, two fan tails). Testing the water shows 40 nitrate, but my tap water is testing at 30. I don't have any plants, although from reading I'm not convinced this is going to be the answer to my prayers, but I have added some fluval media to my fluval U3 (the clean and clear cartridge) that supposedly helps reduce nitrate. I am looking at the nitrate removal pads, but wanted to see if anyone has any advice or guidance please?

Thanks in advance

I don't know if I cycled my aquarium

Posted: 15 Jan 2019 07:50 AM PST

So, this will sound silly, let me explain.

We own a small aquarium for our goldie. We then bought a new tank for him (and some future mates) of 240 liters.

We filled it with water and we also dumped some sand, a (very small) portion of the filter of the first aquarium and some dirty water.

We used household ammonia to cycle the aquarium. We used 5 ml of ammonia every day.

After 20 days of putting ammonia in the tank, there has been no signs of nitrites rising (that I have noticed). There are some nitrates there, but it is very hard to measure the amount or growth because I've only got some strips to test the water.

So,

a) The sand and part of the filter made the cycling process way faster (and skipped the rise of nitrites?)

b) The nitrate readings are a result of the old water we dumped in

Can you give me any advice?

Thank you.

How Overstocked Is My Tank?

Posted: 15 Jan 2019 07:29 AM PST

To start this off,yes I know my tank is overcrowded. And yes eventually I am going to upgrade,I just want to know how badly overcrowded it is. I currently have 3 baby orandas (they're all less than 6 months old,and they are about 2 inches long) in a 30 gallon. I've been having to do water changes every 4 or 5 days and water parameters are fine
