How do I help heal this injury?

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 07:44 PM PDT

Re-homed my goldfish today.

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 03:58 AM PDT

Oh man, I just need to vent.

I'm in literal tears - was so goddamn hard coming back to the house with empty tanks. I think it's for the best, the two single tails were out growing their 240L tank. They're off to a pond. The other 4 fancies were just going to be an issue down the line once things start opening up out of lockdown. I would need someone to take care of them if I want to go anywhere.

I feel guilt and sadness to not see them out to their end of days. I have some solace in that the guy I gave them too has many other fish, knows what he's doing and is a good home.

What started as a spontaneous purchase that my nephew received, to me feeling sad for them in their bowl. I ended up with two large tanks and a deep knowledge of goldfish. Thanks to all who helped me here when I started over two years ago.

I never expected to feel this bad over these stupid idiots.

Genetic Component to Dropsy in Pearlscales?

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 11:02 PM PDT

I maintain a small pond with fantails, orandas, and telescope eyes. Recently, I had been searching for pearlscales and asked my supplier if he could special order some. Within a week he called me back and told me to come pick up some fish. He managed to score 5 large beautiful orange pearlscales. I brought them home and placed them in a quarantine tank and waited the about a month before introducing them to the pond. I introduced all 5 of them and within two weeks, one developed a sore and another one developed dropsy. I pulled both of them out and treated them with kanaplex, epsom salts, and furan-2. I also gave the one with a sore baths in methylene blue. The one with dropsy passed away and the one with the sore eventually started pineconing and passed away too. I guess I missed the fact one of the 3 in the pond had dropsy also because I soon found one dead at the bottom of the pond, pineconed. It seemed odd to me that all three had passed with dropsy but I felt I had done all I can. Less than 2 weeks ago, I noticed one of the two remaining pearlscales was a bit swollen so I pulled him and the other one out and gave them a a round of furan-2, kanaplex, and I dosed their water with epsom salts. The one that was swollen had started pineconing and he lasted nearly two weeks. He was lively and moving around this morning and within 20 minutes of me last checking on him he passed away. After disposing of his body, I looked over at my last remaining pearlscale and noticed he is also starting to pinecone. All the other pearlscales had passed away naturally but I am seriously considering euthanizing this one humanely.

What I consider odd is the fact they were with all my other fish and none of my orandas, fantails, and telescope are exhibiting any signs or symptoms of illness or dropsy while all 5 fish from the same producer developed dropsy. Oddly enough, I've purchased all my fish from the same local fish store. My orandas, fantails, and telescope eyes are all imported from Israel but I have no history or knowledge about my pearlscales.

My water parameters in their quarantine tank is as follows:

Ph: 7.4 Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 10

My water parameters in pond is as follows:

Ph: 7.6 Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 My nitrates vary but they're generally between 10-20.

I use well water and my well water's parameters are:

Ph: 7.4 Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 0

My general hardness is at 10 dGH My carbonate hardness is usually 6 dKH.

Once or twice a week, I run my well hose into my pond and let it overflow for a while (this is my way of doing a water change).

I feed Hikari Lionhead, Hikari Goldfish Sinking Excel, Fluval Bug Bites, and Sera Koi Color. I supplement their diet with bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and beef heart. They also eat frog eggs, tadpoles, duckweed, and water lettuce from their pond.

Which goldfish's wens grow the biggest?

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 08:35 PM PDT

Orandas, lionheads, lionchus, or ranchus? Which one of these has the most wen growth, or all of them pretty much the same? I particularly don't want a lot of wen growth, so this will be helpful.

very confused!

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 03:17 PM PDT

one of my two young oranda goldfish that live in a 35 gal tank keeps gasping at the top and gulping in air. the tank is fully cycled with ammonia,0 nitrite,0 nitrate,5. i'm at the end of a prazipro course for flukes in case it was that but it's still happening. i have two air stones and there is so much water agitation so i know it's aerated. what else could it possibly be?

Goodbye, Glory and Cherry...

Goodbye, Glory and Cherry...

I'm really going to miss my duo of water piglets. It's been a great three years and they taught me so much as well as being very therapeutic fish friends ;;

I am moving soon but not to a house as I hoped (where I would've set up a 100+ gallon pond for them) but to another apartment, and single-tail goldfish like commons and comets belong in ponds, real big ponds. It wouldn't feel right for me to keep them in the 86 gallon I have for another year when they could live so much better, even if it's not with me.

So, I made a post on Nextdoor.com about them and to my pleasant surprise, several people offered to take them who had really great pond setups. I chose the best planted pond for them to go to. The man who owns the pond and came to pick them up is very kind and experienced. He even let me know he'll acclimate them before adding them. He offered to send me pictures of them once they're in their new home too, so I'm looking forward to that! I'll miss them so much, but I'm so happy for them too!

I'll likely be absent from this sub from here on out, at least for a good while, but I want to wish the very best to you all and your water piggies. <33

A huge special thanks to the person on this sub who gifted me the Python No Spill. It was an absolute life-changer and allowed me to keep my duo with me for a lot longer than I could have, as carpal tunnel syndrome made me struggle with the bucket method of water changes.

I also want to thank those who helped me when my duo was sick a while back and for those who continue to help others in this sub. You guys are awesome!!

I'll miss you guys <3

My goldfish did a thing… NOW WHAT?!?!?!

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 11:34 PM PDT

First of all, hi y'all, I'm new here!

Now… my goldfish did a thing and now there are fertilized eggs all over my tank; some are beginning to hatch 😧

I had ZERO intention or interest in breeding ANY fish, ever. I also don't have the space for any additional fish (the ones I have are in a very undersized tank for their size and quantity, anyway; no hate, please), nor desire to add any more fish to the ones already here. Honestly, I never wanted to have pet fish to begin with, but here we are…

Anyhow… there are 2M 2F LARGE 3-yr old single tails and 2F 1M LARGE adult dojo loaches in the tank. Honestly, I'm not worried about overcrowding as either the loaches or the adult goldies will devour the eggs and fry, and what they don't will likely get sucked into the filter. Again, please no hate.

I'm not an entirely heartless monster, though, and did manage to collect a fair amount of eggs and some live brand spanking new fry hatchlings in two separate containers.

My question is, now what (other than obviously separating the males from females)? How do I keep these tiny fragile guys alive? What do I feed them? How do I keep the water in their container habitable without creating too much flow? Do they need any sort of vegetation in there?

I have a spare 5 and 10 gal tanks, and can go pick up a small filter at the LFS in the morning (recommendations?). What else do I need?

Thanks in advance!

How long does a goldfish mating period last?

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 11:05 PM PDT

Pretty much the title but, in my older post I was questioning whether my two goldfish were male/female. Turns out they've been chugging out eggs for the past 2 months. Currently have 15 fry from batch #2 and 1 from the first batch in a separate tank. My question is how long does the mating season last? They're pretty much going at it hammer and tongs for the past 3 months ( I live in a warm country so the water temp is naturally higher and I try to cool it down as often as possible ).

Cheers.

Planted tank switching to sand, pot my plants?

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:52 PM PDT

I'm changing my 75 gal over from gravel to sand because my piglet digs, sucks, and spits constantly. We think our baby ranchu who just died may have even swallowed a piece of gravel and been unable to pass it. So needless to say we're making the change ASAP. But we have some Java ferns and Amazon swords currently planted. I know sand is not ideal for plants. I was wondering if I could stick something like fluval stratum into a few small terracotta pots and just place them on top of the sand? My goldfish doesn't bother the plants at all usually. Or any other ideas? We love our plants but our goldfish come first.

Dojo Loaches and White Clouds

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 01:09 PM PDT

I'm thinking of adding one or both of these fish to my 55 gallon fancy goldfish tank. The tank has two HOB filters, and a sponge filter. There are also some live plants. Right now I have two very young orandas. If I were to add any of these fish, how many should I put in? Thanks in advance.

Bacterial Bloom?

Fish with torn tail.

Posted: 07 Jun 2021 12:26 PM PDT

So my fish Sprinkles moved in circa 2017 after Dorothy passed (SIP DOROTHY)

My fish Bubba was super lonely afterward. He sat in the corner of his tank and barely moved. I kept Sprinkles quarantined and put her in when she was ready. Bubba was swimming around and finally his old self again! Last year I upgraded from a 30 gallon to a 55 and added a new tank mate, Panda.

Now since then I've kinda noticed that Sprinkle's tail is sort of tore. At first, I just thought it was water quality so I upgraded and I do a 50 percent water change once a week and add a cap full of prime. But it's still torn and I have no idea what to do.

Some help would be appreciated!

Some info

-Panda and bubba are fine they have no tail tears.

-Tank is cycled and I have a Fluval aquarium

-If Bubba is just being a jerk I'll happily buy a tank divider.

This little guy hasn't moved for a while, can't tell if he's dead or not. I've smelled him and he doesn't smell dead. Water levels are OK. I do a partial water change every week to keep the ammonia down. I am having trouble with algae. Cleaning the glass every other day.
