Goldfish - Aquariums - My newest telescope, suitable for dry-land use

My newest telescope, suitable for dry-land use

Bought two new tanks so we are about to migrate some goldies. This is Jerome that I have already shown in my first post. He grew up alone in a small tank. After 2.5 years I started to introduce him to some other goldies and it is amazing to see his social behavior. No issues whatsoever.

Took advantage of the beautiful weather and got plants to decorate around the gold gang.

My cousin goofed. He brought this home and put it into my freshwater goldfish tank. I asked for sand substrate for my freshwater goldfish tank. Is this bad? Can it be used in freshwater?

I've read the salt part of the wiki, but I'm still kind of confused.

Posted: 15 May 2020 04:16 PM PDT

I got my four shipped goldfish on Tuesday. Two black moors and two calico fantails that are only about an inch long. Yesterday I noticed a small white spot on the fin of one of the black moors and I'm not sure exactly what it is. My last post was about this issue if you want tank parameters. It's also only 29 gallons. I'm in the process of picking out a much larger (permanent) tank and getting it set up in the next few months.

Regardless if it's ich or some other problem I figured adding some salt wouldn't hurt. I ordered some api aquarium salt and it arrived today. Do I need something to test the amount of salt in the tank? Or can I just make sure to add the correct amount of salt?

Can I get some details on how to add in the salt? Do I take, say, a gallon of water out of the aquarium, add in the correct amount of salt for the whole tank and then slowly add the gallon back in? How slowly should the water be added back into the tank?

Could someone just explain how to do it like I'm five.

Why do they do this? They’re in a spacious 60 gal aquarium but they’ve been staying in the corner with each oher. (Swimming around normally otherwise, not swim bladder issues as far as I can tell)

Hi, I'm going to be getting 2 orandas and I was wondering what type of pellet I should get. Should I get Hikari or New Life Spectrum?

Aquarium Dimensions and Overstocking options

Posted: 15 May 2020 09:57 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I'm in the planning stages for a fancy goldfish tank and I'd like some feedback on dimensions. A have a bit of flexibility on footprint but not weight. Thus, I have some options if I lower the height. Please let me know which tank is better for Orandas/Ranchus. Also, how many Oranda/Ranchu or combination of the types you think can live comfortably?

36x18x18 - A 50gal breeder Or 36x24x14 - A 52gal custom

I can potentially do a 4ft aquarium, however I'd prefer to avoid it unless there is a drastic quality of life increase or I can overstock. 48x24x12 - 58gal

If it makes any difference I have 2x330gph canisters, 3x6inch diameter sponge filters and intend on making this barebottom with potted plants. Ideally one water change a week but I can see myself managing 2 plus daily cleaning.

Thanks in advance!!

Dropsy

Posted: 15 May 2020 02:13 PM PDT

I have this small-ish oranda alone in a 20 gallon tank at the moment and a few days ago i noticed a white string-looking mucus or fungus around the tank, there was a bit in the exterior sponge of the fish (there's none on the actual filter media... wich doesn't make sense) and a few string here and there attached to a wall or piece of plastic of the tank. I didn't know what it was but since the next day of noticing that I saw a little white bumpy mucus attached to my orandas head I decided to act and scrub every single bit of that white stuff form the tank as well as remove the white spot on my oranda (wich almost fell by itself) and did a 35% water change. Ever since this day i haven't noticed any more white stuff gorwing in the tank but also, it really hasn't been that many days.

To this day I still don't know what it is but i suspect it might have to do something with feeding live bloodworms to my goldfish, i mainly think is that because if not, whats the issue? (btw i will be not feeding live bloodworms anymore); still i don't know why that appeared because there has never been any food residue in the tank.

But that's only some information...

Then i have been noticing that he is only pooping rarely and he poops white stringy stuff... today i specially noticed it was his because it was a very long white kind of line and it kinda looked like poop, plus if it was that mucus again i would also have seen it on the sponge that covers the filter in the tank like the last time. After noticing that i stared at him for a few minutes and started noticing that there might be a slight lift on one or two scales next to the gills and i got alarmed just by thiking of dropsy.

I really love him and don't want him to die but also i don't really know what to do, i dont know if it really is dropsy or just me overlooking at his scales so much that i notice they very slightly stick out. The problem is not the fact that i don't know if it's dorpsy (wich also freaks me out) but if that is the case i will for sure be noticing a harsher reaction on his body; my real concern is the fact that i don't know the cause. I ordered som epsom salt so i can do 5 minute salt baths and start from there but i'm afraid i will never fix it because just treating the fish is not enough if is something that's in my tank.

Then i though that if i really see it getting worse i will order metroplex and kanaplex to treat the fish but i sitll have so many questions...

-Can epsom slat cure by itself dropsy (wich i dont know if he really has, but the sooner i act the better... i think) if so, can i do 5 minute baths everyday... or what's the best way to doit?

-If i dose the medicine from seachem in the tank, will it ruin my beneficial bacteria (because if that's the case then i'm screwed cause i dont know how to cope the start of a new beneficial bacteria colony with him already in the tank

Some maybe useful info:

I do have a 5 gallon tank (to qt in) but i feel like it might stress him a small tank and if it's not the case and you guys recommend me moving him to that spare 5 gallon tank, should i do the treatment in there... cause i feel like even if it cures the bacteria/parasite that he might have... will it still be remaining in the 20 gallon tank?

(fyi, altough it sounds very bad he is not giving any other sings to be concerend, he is really active and hungry but for now i will stop feeding and keep the lights always off for a bit to help (tell me if that's a good idea)).

Questions about the aquarium cycle, food brands and use of salt.

Posted: 15 May 2020 12:18 PM PDT

So I am preparing to have a goldfish tank and i have stumbled upon with various articles saying that the time of the cycling process can be reduced using substrate and filters from already cycled aquariums and using liquid nitrifying bacteria (I already bought a bottle but not for the cycling but for compensate the loss of bacteria in the water changes) so I want to know if this is true as some forums and articles claim that the process can be reduced from a month to one week, also regarding the food not all brands are found in my country so I want someone to tell me if any of the brands I found are good, I found these brands: Nutrafin, Tetra, Tetrajungle, Incros, Nutripez, Tetracolor, Omega One and Tetrafin also about how is used salt in freshwater aquariums

Sorry for possibly bad english

I need advice on Brown Algae!!

Posted: 15 May 2020 08:28 AM PDT

Hello, I'm wondering if anybody could help with my tanks brown algae issue. I've had my fish for years and never had any issue with algae but around a month ago I noticed some brown marks on the glass and since then, no matter how hard I scrub to get it out, it comes back within the next day or so and seems to be getting worse. The water remains clear and it doesn't seem to bother my 2 goldies but it's annoying me and I'm even considering getting a new tank.

Any advice? Thank you.
