Trauma/Stress Induced Swim Bladder Disorder Questions

Posted: 16 May 2020 10:00 PM PDT

Hi everyone,

My pond was recently the target of raccoon attacks. I lost half of my Koi, 2 were swooped and eaten, 2 were stressed to death (no sign of injury, just found in the skimmers lifeless with water parameters normal). The latest incident was the day I actually put the netting over the pond, I found my largest koi in the skimmer that night, but it was alive. After I took it out of the skimmer and put it in a 5 gallon bucket, i inspected the fish and it was visually fine, looked/looks very healthy, scales are flat and vibrant. However, its swim bladder seems to have an issue as it is swimming on its side. The next morning I put it back in the pond and it promptly went to one of the caves and has stayed there for a week, occasionally scooting out, but never rising from the floor. It continues to stay on its side, its right side to be exact (when i rolled him over to the left to inspect, it rolled right back over to the right). This fish was my largest / most aggressive feeder and now a shadow of its former self. NOTE: I'm aware of the pea solution, but it will not eat them, I tried to feed it some peas the night I got it out of the skimmer, but it spit them out. I can't get it to come up to feed with the rest of the koi either.

Question for the community is, has anyone dealt with a koi this traumatized? Do they eventually chill out? Will it remain stressed as long as its world is 90 degrees different? As this swim bladder disease seems stressed induced, should it clear as the fish calms down? When do I bite the bullet and look for a fish vet? Anybody have a vet come fix something like this, any idea of price? There is no way I'm transporting it to a vet, would be mobile.

So I suspect I have sneaky koi!

Posted: 16 May 2020 05:19 AM PDT

I recently got a new fish tank and the guy was overly enthusiastic to give me his fish. Some have since been rehomed and the rest have had to have rehoming put on hold as we are in lockdown here. Well I suspected a little while ago that I may have two koi as these tiny goldfish I had no longer than an inch and a half 2 inches tops had barbels. If had them for 2 months now nearly and one of them who has a bent tail is now nearly as big as my biggest goldfish who is a good 3 - 4, inches long. So with how quickly they have grown and with their shape and barbels I think the guy has given me koi and I'm not too sure what I can do about it! Any advice? My fish tank is overstocked as it is and as I said I am trying to get fish rehomed as most of these fish including the koi looking ones were NOT in the tank when I viewed it but he turned up with them after delivering my tank. I want to try to give them the best life I can so any suggestions would be great 😅 x
