Just finished the scape for my breeding project tank! Gonna cycle for a long time to make sure the rocks don't affect the water

[What is this?] This guy just magically showed up in my tank ~2 weeks after I planted it! Is it a shrimp? The body seems tall compared to other images I've found, but it has a tucked tail. He just crawls around.

Help with what to do for these water parameters?

Posted: 09 Aug 2019 05:52 PM PDT

Hi!

I'm in the process of setting a 5.5gal up for 11 Halocaridina rubra. My tank's been cycling for a month and when I tested it, it had extremely high ammonia (~8) & other levels. This is probably set off by using Bio-Activ Live Aragonite sand for substrate when I should've just used the inert stuff. Trying to set things right, though. After working to fix it with 50% water changes every day for 3 days, here are my parameters:

salinity: 1.010

pH: 7.8

ammonia: .50 ppm

nitrites: 2.0 ppm

nitrates: 10 ppm

I have a few options I've thought of but I'm not sure which one to go for to help next. The big problem is I couldn't cancel my order for the shrimp, and they're here now and in the bag. The supplier (petshrimp.com) told me they'd be okay in the bag for a week or two while I get things straightened out, but I'm a little anxious. While I'd much rather them in a proper tank and not hanging out in a bag in limbo, I definitely don't want to put them in some really bad water and kill or hurt them. I'm really not sure where to go from here.

Should I just wait for my freshly added little plant to help me cycle the tank?

Should I dose Nite-Out II for a few days?

Should I just completely remove all the Bio-Activ sand and add some other substrate?

Should I keep doing 50% water changes until things are peachy?

All of the above? Something else?

I've also added half a cleaned & pulverized eggshell to the tank to help with calcium, though I know that'll take a long while to dissolve and help out.

I've made quite a few missteps while trying to prepare for these guys, and any help in allowing me to make things right for them would be much appreciated!

Feeding

Posted: 09 Aug 2019 12:02 PM PDT

How often do you feed your shrimp? I'm new to this, I have a colony of orange sunkist around 20 or so, I've been feeding one or two pellets of Mineral junkie and like one or two bug bites for pleco's along with every few days I give a tiny bit of bacter AE or Shrimp Fit. should I only feed every other day?

How important is it to remove natural dying shrimp? I have a small planted tank and I hardly every see any dead shrimp with over a year of having the tank. I am afraid they are getting lost in all the plants. I have heard shrimp only live a year or so.

Best place to buy online?

My LFS is a bit out of the way, and I'm a little nervous about buying online. Any recs? I don't want to introduce disease into my established tanks 😫
